Ya'all Found A Church Yet? - 12/2/2011

Parts of Easley are very very attractive. The Saluda River is quite pretty, and is currently being dredged. Some of the prices for McMansions in the backwater near the river are just plain ridiculously high. As a Furman University professor told me, "There's not a house in Pickens County worth $300K." And on Teakwood Dr., and Ridge Point, those would be low-end prices. Another writer says people here pride themselves in their ignorance, this is somewhat true. If you come here, you'll be shocked by the zoning. McMansions here, Trailer Parks there. Pristine farmland here, Strip mall and gaudy Spinx gas station there. And churches. Oh, the churches! Big churches, little churches, mega-churches. And religion. Next to pride in ignorance, pride in churches is huge here. "God saved us with the Word and the Blood! The Word of the bible, and the Blood of Jesus Christ!" Yeah, sure. And make sure you leave out a cookie and some milk for Santa, and leave your tooth, and the nice fairy will leave you a quarter. Climate is nice, only 10 miles from beautiful Reedy Falls park and the City of Greenville, eight miles from the 14 mile-long Swamp Rabbit Trail. Law enforcement is surly, drug laws enforced to the point of absurdity, and next to being a baptist, being a flag-waving patriot is the real local religion. Kind of nice, in a depressing sort of way, and lord oh lord, you WILL be asked over and over again, if you've found a church yet, (and if not, why not. BUt being next to Greenville and the trail are definitely pluses.[read more...]

up and coming place - 7/1/2010

Easley lies in the shadow of Greenville and is nearly as close to Clemson Univ. a small city built around a railroad system with textile mills initially the main source of industry. The Baptist religion is by far the most prevalent with a smattering of catholics and Presbyterians mixed in along with non-denominations as well. Not much happens here though without much money around it's no wonder. City is mostly middle to lower middle income folk with deep southern roots. Most people know one another but as an outsider I still feel welcomed. They don't hate northerners here to much but don't expect them to care that you think they talk funny. There's a weird sense of pride in their ignorance and they have little desire to learn what their maw ain't taught them. Trailers on the outskirts and a definite division of poor on one side of the tracks versus the rich on the other. Schools are okay but rather militaristic in their thinking. Yes ma'am, no ma'am kind of stuff. Very rigid conservative thinkers. It has potential to be a nicer place but it needs more industry. Good hospital to work in though a bit small. Most everyone commutes to Greenville for work. [read more...]
