Papermill Stench - 2/7/2010

Georgetown like many nice towns are ruined by the foul smell of these mills that not only polute the air but the water as well. Why there are not controls put on them is beyond me. Amelia Island, Florida is another example of a beautiful place compromised by corporate paper mill greed. Why should the citizens be exposed to this?[read more...]

Georgetown atmosphere - 6/15/2007

I don't live in Georgetown, but spent a few days there on vacation in the summer of 2006. I'd never want to live there because of the disgusting, nauseating smell that wafts over the town from the paper mill. We stayed in a lovely bed and breakfast in this otherwise charming town, but after we checked in and took a stroll outside, I noticed what I first thought was the odor of overcooked saurkraut. I thought that was an odd thing to be cooking on a near 100-degree day, more a smell I associate with fall and winter in my hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. I soon discovered that this smell was coming from the paper mill, and became more pungent and cloying as the day wore on. The stench filled my nose and the taste of it got into my mouth. So, unless you have no sense of smell, Georgetown is not a great place to live or spend any amount of time. It's a shame because visually, it is quite lovely and I ate some of the best fresh-caught fish there that I'd ever had.[read more...]
