Trapped Here for Now - 1/26/2011
Been living here about two years with my new wife, and we've been living like hermits for the most part. First her relatives got weird on us, and weren't too friendly after the initial visit, leaving us with no contacts whatsoever.
Real estate is very reasonable, the only plus I can see to living here.
Trying to establish any semblance of a social life is near impossible without attending church three times per week, and social events seem to center around eating; buffets, barbecues, and picnics, so there are a lot of obese people, which gets depressing for a fitness buff like me. It's very family-oriented, so you'd better have a kid or three if you want to fit in at all.
The locals are often rude and snobby, which surprised me because I thought the Northeast had a monopoly on being jerks, but apparently not. I don't seem to get much flak for being a "Yankee", but I've always dressed like a slob anyway, being in construction, so I fit right in appearance-wise I guess.
Trying to move to a more comfortable city, somewhere with maybe some running trails and more outdoor stuff to do, with friendlier people, but I can't seem to sell our little townhouse, so we are stuck here in Purgatory for the foreseeable future, until the housing market picks up, which could be forever, with the current cast of idiots in office.[read more...] |
