what can I say... - 7/21/2009
I grew up here and left over 30 years ago. Back then there was a promise (a hope, spark) that Dallas would be here soon... that stopped in Sherman. The town does not know how to grow. There was a surge downtown in the mid-90s to create an arts district. That died when Tortorichi made his million in real estate and moved to Costa Rica. The people couldn't save the most important piece of architecture ( the old high school) from the wrecking ball. There is a small group of artists and thinking people that live here.[read more...] |

Rural small-town mentality - 11/13/2007
Denison is not far removed from the old west cowboy culture. Jeans, boots and baseball hats are the dress for everything. The downtown area closes at 5 p.m. Road signs are targets for passing pick-up trucks. Lost or abandoned pets are caged for three days, then killed. We've lived here 6 years and are just discovering how deep-rooted the good-old-boy culture remains. It may seem quaint for a few years, but don't expect much progress if you stay.[read more...] |

Change of Season - 5/4/2007
Denison definitely has four seasons, although the spring and fall can sometimes be brief. Temperatures in the summer can soar above 100 while winter usually always includes at least one snow fall with below freezing temperatures. Spring celebrates the arrival of many different types of wildflowers along the roadside. Fall color is not as spectacular as say the mountain areas or the northern states, but we do have some.[read more...] |
