We've lived near many Southern metropolitan areas. (New Orleans, Pensacola, Mobile, Nashville, etc.) We moved here in 2004 and have been very happy, but there are areas that haven't pleased us. Texas schools are the worst I've ever been involved with either as parent or teacher. There are decent private schools beyond our budget. It took me one year to get a teaching license, even though the tests I was required to take were the same as in the pervious state we lived. Auto insurance is the highest we've ever had by about $500.00 more a year. We had to pay $400.00 for our son to attend a driving school because the schools here no longer provide Driver's Ed. Our light bill averages $450.00 a month from May-October, and that's with the thermostat set between 82 and 87 degrees! We must drive everywhere since there is a very limited public transportation system, mostly near downtown. We are avid cyclists, but this is not a biker friendly town. Meat is high; a 3-4lb roast cost about $17.00. Strange, considering Fort Worth was/is a major hub for cattle ranching! It has made us a very meatless family, so that's good for our health. Clothes are more expensive. Fresh produce is more expensive and vegetables are not as nice as they should be. Gasoline prices are mid-range. I do not know of anyone without a job except those who don't put much effort into looking. However, I have had problems getting a job as a teacher, supposedly because I don't have a Masters. Every year, Dallas and Fort Worth school districts have "budget" problems at the end of the school year and lay-off 200-400 teachers. Then when the next year begins, there are dozens of openings on their respective websites. There is a church or faith of worship for everybody. I do yoga, zumba, tennis, jog, and cycle. In the fall and winter months, there are lots of races to run or cycle in. The museum district is the best ever - even compared to the Smithsonian Museums in D.C. I go to exhibits several times a year. There are restaurants to satisfy any foodie! Our biggest concern is water. Fort Worth population is expected to exceed 1.5 million in a few years. There is no major water source here and the current drought will have a serious impact for several years. Several cities around Dallas lost their water supplies this summer. [read more...]

Having lived in Fort Worth TX, my entire life I have seen the highs and lows. Today Fort Worth is a fantastic city to live in. From our museums, to the parks, to Bass Hall concert hall to the cultural district and of course our famous stock yards; Fort Worth has something for everyone. Although the population is fairly large, there is a small town atmosphere to almost everything. We have colleges, parks, libraries, a zoo and many other attractions and are not far from Six Flags over Texas. We take pride in the stockyard and history of the western cattle drives. Although there are places in town (like most big towns) where you may not feel safe, the downtown has been totally updated and is a safe and fun place to go. Our biggest hangup is the traffic which is bad during the morning and afternoon business day start and end times.[read more...]

Just a couple of opinions regarding some previous comments- The cost of living is indeed very low, and yes, you get more square footage for the buck the farther you travel away from downtown and into the cultural "wasteland" of suburbia. You sacrifice the flavor and diversity of the city, but on the bright side, the education quality is high and there is very little crime to speak of. If culture is more of a priority, I'd recommend the hospital district just south of downtown, Arlington Heights, or look into the development around the old Montgomery Ward center. I know I'm not the first to say that jobs abound in the Metroplex and all over Texas. Quality universities all over DFW have done good things for the economic development. There are plenty of fun things to do all year round as well. As far as the weather is concerned, it does get pretty hot. But I'm living in Atlanta now, and Fort Worth is not nearly as humid and it makes a big difference. Granted there is not much shade in Fort Worth to protect you from baking, but if you're looking south for a higher quality of life, the weather could be much more miserable than it is in North Texas. (and frankly, the wide open space feel is worth sacrificing the shade for, imho) I definitely don't sense over-conservatism in Fort Worth. I feel like this is more of a preconceived notion that people feel they have to magnify. The Metroplex does lean a little to the right for the most part, but not like all of Texas. I know plenty of liberal-minded folks, and even some Libertarians, and a vast number of independents. I certainly don't feel like anyone is overbearing regarding their political opinions. Fort Worth and North Texas are good. The Metroplex is so large that everyone ought to find a place that suits them culturally/socioeconomically. Is it heaven on earth? No, but it sure isn't a bad place to live.[read more...]

If you can tolerate a relentless hot humid summer for about 10 weeks out of the year, then the other 42 weeks or so are pretty mild. Very little winter with the exception of a few isolated times with highs in the 30s, maybe 3 to 10 days a year. One or two snow/ice days a year, which pretty much shuts down the town.[read more...]

I moved to Fort Worth from Wisconsin in search of a warmer winter and a comfortable life. I've gotten the warmer winter, but I don't dig the lifestyle here very much. It's too country and conservative for my blood. I'm from Madison, a relatively liberal city, so coming to Fort Worth was quite the culture shock. I like Fort Worth's downtown area. I think it's very nice and clean. The Stockyards is a cute novelty at first, but gets old after a while, especially if you aren't into cowboys and country music (I'm not). The city has some beautiful neighborhoods, but it also has some terrible neighborhoods, and they aren't separated by much. Climate change is causing the summers to be hotter and drier than ever. It's not very scenic anywhere. The people who are so in love with Texas drive me crazy, but probably not as much as the evangelical Christians that are everywhere thumping their bibles or the arrogant men wearing their Wranglers, chewing their tobacco and driving their SUVs everywhere. Seems people are into religion and making money. All I ever hear about are churches and how cheap it is to live here. Cheap, sure, but worth it? I don't think so. I'm moving to California, where it's more expensive, but has better weather, scenery and liberalism.[read more...]

Fort Worth is a place where you can always find something to do. It is big on its culture, and it a very diverse community. Downtown is a Great place to hang out. alot of celebrities when they come to Ft. Worth will come down to Sundance square for autographs.....[read more...]

If you live in Dallas, the transportation is ok. They need to expand the light rail to Ft Worth, because the transportation in Ft Worth and every community surrounding Dallas is less than desirable. They need better ways to get between Ft Worth and Dallas because driving is a nightmare.[read more...]
