Northeast Kingdom living.... - 6/24/2007
Lived in "St Jay" in the 1990s and found the people there then to be among the friendliest in Vermont. Since then the area has declined considerably. St Johnsbury Trucking, a large interstate trucking firm, Northeast Tools, Vermont Dowel and Square and Hovey's Stores have all gone out. I am surprised that the unemployment rate isn't higher. Being the county seat (caledonia) and having a state prison close by you can imagine what a good percentage of the local population is. All and all it is a quiet area relatively free of violent crime. It has a nice Atheneum and Musuem as well as an excellent private academy (9-12)that the town kids (free)and boarding kids from other states/countries attend.[read more...] |
