Taxes - 8/27/2009

Virginia may seem to have a reasonable income tax rate (5.0%) but when you add up all the other taxes i.e. Personal property tax, business property tax, sales tax, county real-estate taxes, county dump fee’s, dog license fees, and the list goes on. I think you get the point. If you own nothing, have nothing, don't work, Virginia is quite affordable. It's been getting worst year after year.[read more...]

Josey - 3/10/2007

We moved to Mechanicsville to be closer to my job in Richmond, from N. Virginia. My husband still commutes back and forth to N. VA. Prior to moving, we checked out the schools and found Hanover County to have the best academically accredited schools, not only in the area but in the state, which was the most important aspect of our relocation. We then searched for the nicest house we could afford with convenient shopping and somewhat rural neighborhood. Four years later, the rural neighborhood, which was pretty quiet initially, has people zooming by all day. Not a peaceful moment to be had. The grocery stores and other shopping areas nearby were operated by nice people making the area even more attractive. Now they are all run and operated by teenagers with their pants hanging off their butt. The gym that I really enjoyed going to has become a hangout for thugs as well. Traffic is horrible and becoming more and more like Northern VA, some of the worst in the nation. On the positive side, when we sell our house in the next 18 mo. to 2 years, we will make a considerable profit, as the growth and new schools have attracted more young families to the area who evidently have way more money than we do. I have recently seen neighborhoods boasting signs that read "Homes starting in the low $800,000's". I look forward to moving to a quiet neighborhood with happier people who don't have to battle traffic daily and no thugs following me around the store trying to get a date (especially while I have my 3 kids alongside) by making rude comments about my body and what they would like to do to it.[read more...]
