Pros and cons - 5/23/2010
Just like most places, Parkersburg definitely has it's pros and cons. The pros: pretty low crime rate (although it's growing more and more every year), typically no extreme weather and it really is a pretty place.
Now the cons which are much more extreme: all the chemical plants have created a hazardous and toxic environment, (Marietta, OH has one of the highest cancer rates in the country and auto-immune disease rates are very high also), very few good-paying jobs unless you are in the healthcare field or work for the government, NOTHING to do and the teens get bored really easily and that never leads to anything good, the hospitals and health care in this area suck, the list could go on and on and on...
I have lived here my entire life and am hoping to leave in the next few years. There really is nothing good or positive about staying here... If you are considering a move to this area...one word...DON'T!!! You will be sick year round and definitely bored

Air Quality is closer to 18, not 49 - 9/21/2008
The neighboring towns of Belpre & Marietta, Ohio, both have air quality figures of 18. The data here shows 49 for Parkersburg. I believe that 18 is closer to the truth because the valley that contains these 3 towns also contains SEVERAL PLASTICS and CHEMICAL FACTORIES. This area, the Mid-Ohio Valley, frequently suffers thermal inversions, in which the polluted air is trapped close to the ground. Some of the public water systems and private wells, also, are polluted with chemicals that have been proven to cause cancer. For example, a large DuPont Teflon facility, near Parkersburg, is in the middle of a class action lawsuit for dispersing C-8, a known carcinogen, into the air and water -- for several decades. Sorry, but this is not my personal opinion. It's based on scientific facts that I have found through many years of research. Parkersburg is dying. There are very, very few good jobs to be found here. The population is decreasing more and more every year as people are wising up and getting out while they still can. Parkersburg, West Virginia is a small city of about 30,000-plus people situated on the Ohio River. Most of the people live in neighboring Vienna or in the surrounding suburban areas. Parkersburg has a nice main library, a used bookstore in the old Carnegie Library, good schools, and two good local hospitals. Traffic can be a pain especially along Grand Avenue, but there are plenty of places to eat along the way. Most neighborhoods are nice although there are some trashy spots closer to downtown. There are also many older Victorian homes. Violent crime is low here. Weather is mild temperature-wise in the fall and winter although January and February can be very cold. Heavy snowfall is rare and doesn't usually happen until December at the earliest. Strong but brief thunderstorms are common in the summer, which is hot and humid.
