Decaying old Rust Belt Ohio River town - 8/6/2009
Wheeling has gone from almost 70,000 people in 1940 to barely 28,000 in 2009! Steel and Coal made the Upper Ohio Valley but the mills are all but gone and virtually all high paying industrial jobs went with them. Positives: very low cost of living; decent schools in many areas, great boating on the Ohio and nearby lakes, much wildlife in nearby forests. The suburbs like Woodsdale, Elm Grove, "the Pike", and St. Clairsville in OH are still pretty nice. Negatives: few professional jobs, no tech, not much culture, large portion of the population is elderly retired people. So many vacant houses they bulldoze entire city blocks. Raising a Family - 6/20/2009
Wheeling, located on the Ohio River in the northern panhandle, is a safe and affordable place to raise a family. There are good schools, parks, children's sports activities, health care, etc. I-70 easily connects families via an easy drive to the museums, zoos, etc. of Pittsburgh, PA (50 miles N/NE)and Columbus, OH (120 miles W).[read more...] |

Wheeling - 7/19/2007
Wheeling is a fantastic place to live, work, play , and raise a family. I went to college there and left after graduation. Now that I have several years of work experience and have traveled, I am ready to move back and settle there. In the beautiful Ohio Valley. It's close to Pittsburgh, PA (50 mi), Columbus, OH (120 mi), Cleveland, OH (135 mi), Niagara Falls, NY (approx. 290 mi., etc. Great public and private schools for both secondary and colligate-level education.
