There are better places - 2/21/2012
I would not recommend the Atlanta or Georgia area to anyone. Got called into jury duty twice during the time I lived there. It really opened my eyes to what goes on in the area. It's a strange place. Do yourself a favor believe what people have written here, don't waste your time or money. [read more...] |

grass not always greener on the other ... - 7/29/2011
I lived in the Atlanta area, Chamblee, for 4 years.
Before that, I lived in the NE Ohio area, as I was born and raised here.
To compare the two states is a snap for me.
There are homewreckers everywhere...where are they not?
We sure have them in Ohio.
There are gay people (non-straight) everywhere...where are they not?
They live all over Ohio and the North.
However, here is one of the big differences...
the weather.
When I lived there, the furnace did not come on until December and did not go off until March.
In Ohio, the furnace comes on in the fall and goes off in the spring which means that only one season here is w/o furnace-heat.
And, the cost of living is more in the South, but that's what is called the sunshine tax.
Here, the sunshine is not so much and the cost of living is a lot less...which is why I have not been in a big hurry to move back.
But, the social life in Atlanta is way better than up North as there is more to do and more time to do it in warmer weather.
Life is a series of tradeoffs, so a person must pick which set of choices appeal to him/her the most: weather, big city life, limited transporation, obvious diversity in the population, etc.
And, to those who think the grass is greener elsewhere, let me know where that is as I'm sure that I can find fault there, too. [read more...] |

Moved to Georgia from New Jersey - 10/23/2010
I moved to Georgia from New Jersey six years ago and it has been quite a culture shock. The biggest shock for me has been how far behind the schools are. I am a public school teacher and the schools here (Gwinnett County) are easily two years behind in their curriculum. The people here also are not as genuine as the people in New Jersey. This has been a hard move for me. I have been trying to find a teaching job back home for two years now and due to the economy I haven't had any luck. Before moving to GA consider the great education in NJ. I wish I had done my research. GA ranks 41 in the smartest states. NJ ranks number four![read more...] |

Moving to Georgia. - 9/10/2010
I plan on moving to Georgia as soon as I find a job. I currently live in Chicago and I'm so tired of the cold fall and winter seasons. I'm looking for a nice town to live in near Conyers. I've checked out Ellenwood and was advised to look only at the Henry county side. I really love the State and think it would be great for me and my family. Any suggestions would be great.[read more...] |

ATLANTA--GREAT PLACE TO CALL HOME - 8/20/2010
As a New York "transplant" Atlanta took some getting used to. I moved here to be able to live more comfortably and got more than I bargained for. My quality of life has improved ten-fold. I certainly could not afford a home in NY and was able to achieve so much more here in such little time.
P.S. I miss NY for genuine friends. Not the same here...too many "shallow" people. [read more...] |

Relocating to Georgia - 7/27/2010
I have set a plan into place to relocate to Georgia North of Atlanta in 2011. I just got back from ATL on July 26. This was my time to look around for houses, schools, churches, shopping etc. I have been to ATL several times but this particular time kind of disappointed me. I didn't feel the same excitement that I have been feeling about the move. I guess because this time it was work and not fun. I have friends in Canton, Woodstock, Atlanta (southside), Buckhead and Alpharetta. My daughter has been in ATL for 6 years and she loves it and so do all of my friends and all say that they would never move back to Maryland. My daughter also said to stay North of ATL because there is less crime and better schools. I am so undecided now and I don't know why. I love the Metro Washington DC area where I was born and raised. I live in Bowie and love it but everything is so expensive here now. I have a 13 year old who will be attending HS and I have chosen Milton HS for her. for what I paid for a house in Bowie I can buy 2 in Georgia for the same price. DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO...........[read more...] |

Where Are The Safest Places To Live? - 7/25/2010
I'm a white, single, 26 yr old male who is relocating from Dallas/Ft. Worth,TX to Georgia in the middle of August this year. I have been looking for a safe, entertaining place to call home that has a good amount of young adults residing there. I know that Atlanta is going to be an obvious answer from many as there are tons of young adults and lots of things to do. However, I have heard and read from many that crime is can be a big concern, and traffic is unbearable.
So, my question is this: Are there any Georgia residents who can recommend ANY safe, entertaining region/city for young adults like myself outside of Atlanta?[read more...] |

Relocating From Dallas/Ft. Worth, TX to Georgia! - 7/25/2010
I am a young, white, single male (26 years old) and will be relocating from Dallas/Ft. Worth,TX to Georgia in the middle of August. I have been trying to research safe, yet entertaining areas for single people my age. I know that Atlanta is going to be an obvious answer when it comes to entertainment, but I hear that crime can be a concern, and that the traffic can be unbearable.
Are there any Georgia residents who can recommend a safe place outside of Atlanta for someone like myself to live? I just need help with people who are familiar with the better cities/areas to live in, as I am a stranger to the state of GA. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I look forward to being there soon!

Stay as far North of Atlanta as possible - 7/11/2010
We retired and later settled from Southern Maine to Forsyth County in central north Georgia. Here we have parks, walking trails, good climate with somewhat changing seasons, and GREAT SHOPPING MALLS. We are close to Lake Lanier, the integrity of which is super guarded by State and County. One very good aspect of life here is that is very family oriented and religious. There is strong police and sheriff presence and crime is strongly not tolerated, hence an extremely low crime rate. Another fine aspect is that seniors (above 65) pay no school tax on their property tax. The homes are well built and affordable. Gardening is great here. Admittedly the summer is a little warmer than one would want but it does not last that long. Perhaps four warm months, then very temperate. Good physicians and medical care with lots of specialists. We are about fifty miles north of Atlanta, just about enough. [read more...] |
