Review of Silver Ci,

Silver City
Star Rating - 8/2/2017
I have lived here for a large potion of my life. Silver City has many positive aspects that have been mentioned in other comments. For a small town, the Arts Concil does a great job organizing events. It is a tourist town so there are fun shops downtown. But for someone who lives here, the shopping is scarce (Walmart) and quite expensive compared to other communities in the area. If one would like to go shopping elsewhere the nearest shopping is a two hour drive. The theft in the area is bad. It is often not reported so it doesn't show up in the official reports. Although, most people here are very friendly and very helpful. If one is looking for endless days of sunshine and more forest than could ever be explored. Like I mentioned before, the sunshine is plentiful. The problem is it is also very intense. The elevation is between 5000 and 6000 feet causing the Suns rays to be less filtered. I am fair skinned and the sun on my skin hurts. If I go out during the day or just driving in my car, I get sunburnt. If you move here with kids, the schools aren't great. I don't blame the teachers. They seem to care about their job and the kids. The recent state policies and local school management have been seriously lacking. If your children are into sports there is a good network of typical small town sports. Jobs can be tricky. The biggest employers are the mine, hospital, county, and schools. Most places only pay minimum wage or just above. I hope this gives an objective view of the area.

When you move to Silver City shopping is scarce, but hopefully a person noticed that when they move there. Today is in-line shopping and get in the out of doors. Use SPF sunscreen, but higher elevation will burn faster but also is cooler! A lot of what you are saying can be resolved with common sense, and some adjustments. I don’t think people expect to be plentiful jobs in a town that has 9500 people. New Mexico is an acquired taste. Silver City is a bit different than other parts. It is isolated, but then traffic is down. Artists sAnd Events are present without a bevy of people. There are no crossroads like the big towns that drop off people with no place to go. Las Cruces is getting noisy. I’m so glad we live out of town with the traffic and homeless issues. We still love it, but seek cooler air and quirky people. We are edited so that makes it easier to like the town. No children in schools. NM is a state of mind, more than a way of life. It will not be traditional or familiar. The Gila Fiver may be nominated as a wild and scenic river. It is an undiscovered part of the country that has boundless opportunities. The college and the historic areas and downtown really add to the ambience of this small town. We like it!
