Review of Boise City, Idaho

Like stepping back in time.
Star Rating - 3/1/2017
I grew up in the West, so I thought I knew everything I needed to know about Idaho. Wrongo! We've been here almost 2 years.
The pros:
Small town feel. people are polite, low cost housing with plenty of surrounding communities to choose from, enough stores for shopping, growing restaurant culture, easy commutes, clean, safe community, several cultural events at the University, Boise is a good walking town. Plenty of outdoor activities with amazing natural scenery.
The cons:
Provincial/redneck, difficult to find a job if you are not originally from Idaho and/or over 40, Mormon culture permeates everything...nice people, but not inclusive of other philosophies or religions....also, the men are sexist and condescending toward women (I've never been asked so many times, in a professional setting, if I have children). Medical care is a nightmare. Had to go to 5 dentists to get my crown fixed...they looked puzzled, as if they had never created a crown before. Transplanted Californians are pouring into the area bringing their lifestyle with them. The closest big city is SLC which is 5 hours away. Kind of dull. Locals don't accept "new people" so it is challenging to make friends if you are not young with lots of children.
The climate is arid with 4 seasons. It can get cold (sub zero) and hot in the summer (100s), but, in general, is not extreme. We had a terrible winter this year and discovered that they do not plow residential streets. The water is icky...need to double filter it. It is very difficult to find people for services. Took 8 tries to find a landscaping company who actually showed up for their appointment, then followed through with the work they promised...and that seems to be the norm here. Professionalism is non-existent.
Planning on moving mostly because of the lackluster medical care and lack of access to other services.
I'd say that if you belong to the predominant faith, and have young children, then this is the place for you. If you are a single professional, mid-career, a retiree, or a city person....look elsewhere.

Thank you Eber, as a woman I have experienced similar issues.

Hey, I've got to side with Sean D. on this one...and I've never lived in Boise! I'm using this site to find a better situation for my family (YES, Eber, I have kids!), but from reading Eber's post, the only thing that comes through is NEGATIVITY. Can you seriously not see any positive in anything there? I'd be interested to know in which places you've actually enjoyed your time? My guess is it may take more than a change of location to fix that issue. Life is too short to be looking down all the time! And maybe all of those people in "professional settings" were just trying to brake through that thick wall? Just a thought...

I have to respectfully disagree with nearly all this posters cons comments. Due to my career I have moved and lived all over the USA and have moved to and from Boise 4 times now. Now that I'm back, my wife and I plan on NEVER leaving the area again. Boise has some of the nicest people we have ever experienced in our lives. From your CONS- Mormons- We are not Mormon, but have plenty of friends from their faith and have found Mormons to be exceptionally excepting of other faiths. "Mormon culture permeates everything"- What culture? I guess if you mean a culture of family and children, well then yes....that is a good thing in my opinion. Medical care- Medical care has been fantastic for us here and I have NEVER heard one person complain about it here. My wife has dental issues and has had the best dental experiences here in Boise in comparison to other cities we lived in. She even had a crown replaced at the very first dentist she visited right after we moved here. "Had to go to 5 dentists to get my crown fixed" - I absolutely can't believe that. Jobs- "difficult to find a job if you are not originally from Idaho and/or over 40" - we have one of the lowest unemployment rates in the USA, so keep looking. "redneck"????? Perhaps in the outskirts of the area, but name me one city that doesn't have their share. "Kind of dull" ???? Our metro area only have just shy of 700K population, so yes, we are not going to have as much to do as, let's say Los Angeles, but if you look hard enough the Boise area has plenty of year-round fun for a city of its size. "Locals don't accept "new people" so it is challenging to make friends if you are not young with lots of children." - I'm sorry, but that is so false! We have never met so many kind people here who go out of their way to welcome new people into their lives. Having children makes it even easier to get involved with others here in my opinion. "We had a terrible winter this year and discovered that they do not plow residential streets". Of course they plow residential streets! This winter was an unprecedented situation, having the most snow in 30 years. Yes, the city was unprepared, but they did eventually get everything plowed. Again, this was a unique situation. I'm sorry that your experiences here have not been better, but perhaps you may be unconsciously bring these things into you life as an excuse to convince yourself to move elsewhere....which is fine. Not every city or area is right for everyone, but I truly believe that if you were more open to Boise, you would find that this city is much more positive than you've experience thus far. I find Boise to be a welcome oasis in a country with unfortunately too many cities that seem to be slowly deteriorating over the decades. I wish you good luck in your search for a better life. :)

I agree with you Eber. Boise has not kept up with the times, it's like being in the 1950's. For being such a Mormon state the guys are very vicious towards women, but the women there allow it. Poor things.
