Could not wait to leave Oakland
Star Rating - 5/9/2007
Oakland is one of the worst places to call home. The crime rate is one of the highest in the nation, the schools rank among the lowest. Most areas you can't walk in after dark. Violent crime, drugs, dispair...it is all here. Even with this, the cost of living is very high. The traffic into San Francisco or down Highway 880 is always a mess. The only reason I lived here was because the cost of living in San Francisco was so high, and I wanted to make a little money on some real estate. Now that I have, and can move, I feel such a sense of relief. For me, and for the safety and well-being of my child. Think twice about calling Oakland home. Try Berkeley to the North, Fremont to the south, or Walnut Creek to the east. All better, safer, cleaner places.

Asher, I'll assume that Oakland could not wait until you left. You depict Oakland in ways that start at hysterical (in both senses of the word) and end up in outright dishonest. Oakland's crime rate is not "the highest in the nation." That's an outright falsehood. Likewise, your claim that "most areas you can't walk in after dark" is not only grammatically incoherent, but an outright lie: Oakland has sprawling wealthy/affluent neighborhoods––Montclair, Crocker Highlands, Rockridge, Upper Rockridge/Claremont Pines, Upper Oakmore, Oakmore, Trestle Glen, Sequoyah Highlands, Chabot Park Estates, Ridgemont, Claremont Hills, Hiller Highlands, etc.––that are among the safest in all of the Bay Area. Lovely, and safe upper middle-class and middle-class neighborhoods––Leona Heights, Redwood Heights, Lincoln Heights, etc.,––also belie your false statements. To claim that "Walnut Creek, Fremont," and "Berkeley" are "better, safer, and cleaner," than Oakland's wealthy Montclair or its upper middle-class/middle-class Redwood Heights is false, absurd, and redolent of something akin to bigotry, or worse

There are much more negative facts than good in Oakland. Especially when the East, West and Downtown Oakland are considered dangerous place to live and even visit. Unity amongst African Americans disapated in the 1960s, and the drug trade made the city worse in the 80s.
