Commerce Texas is a community that is shriveling. The town has a branch of the A&M system here and should be thriving. I have only been here 1 year, and listening to residents and local politicians voice their view, has led to my decision to finish my grad degree and LEAVE! The heat is unbearable (summers are in the 100teens). The price of everything (gasoline, groceries, services)is higher than surrounding communities, which leads one to believe the local community is gouging college students at the expense of watching their town....die....along with themselves. This town should be renamed-Anti-Commerce, as it is clear the residents are threatened by and do not encourage growth. The college adds 11,000 people to the town, however, even businesses and franchises do not invest here...only a Mcdonalds, Braums and Walmart exist. No recreation exists. A state park/lake, called Cooper State Park, was an ideal place, until politicians sent the water to a far away town. There is no longer a lake...it looks like something out of a Sci-Fi nuclear accident. There is a beautiful beach area, boat landings treed areas for picnicing....but little water-it was piped to another city (I have been told Irving?) A very sad place...keep browsing.

I totally disagree with "keep" but I see this was done 9 years ago. If everyone is paying the same price for gas, groceries, etc, then the students aren't being singled out as "keep" suggests. Small town living is sometimes a bit more expensive as items have to be trucked in. "keep" sounds like a spoiled brat who has a high opinion of themselves as a grad student, and I'm sure most people in Commerce were glad this one has left. Commerce is friendly, neighbors help neighbors, and there are plenty of things to do (and if you don't know, just ask someone for information... I've always been treated nicely while in Commerce. I had several classmates who went to "East Texas State" and it was a nice friendly campus. I know several people in the area and it's always nice to be greeted while "downtown" and several of the various store employees also say HI. It's a good family town, and it's easy to relax and take it easy .... well except for Friday night football... LOL...
