Review of Fredericksburg Virgi, Iowa

Fredericksburg VA region
Star Rating - 11/27/2012
If you can avoid it do not move to this area (other parts of VA are fine). I know there are many who love Spotsylvania county and Fredericksburg, however, those are people who have never lived anywhere else and know no better. This is a hell hole for those of us who desire more than Food Lion grocery stores, Big Box and discount retailers, and would like employment that pays enough to live & work without communting 2-4 hours a day. Housing is over priced for salaries (o.k if you work for local or federal gov't or commute north; there is no culture, unless you count corvette shows and Lynrd Skynrd concerts as culture; sales staff and other "customer" service is either lazy, stupid or both; locals love to suck off the government teat but do not want to pay taxes (every other person seems to be on some kind of disability); a classic example of highway planning "it's been on the 6 year plan for the last 18 years" [direct quote from a co. supervisor] Yes there is a train, but you need a car to get there and it cost more to commute by VRE than to drive. They finally figured out around 2009 or so that they should bring a bus to the VRE station BEFORE the last train leaves. Local elections are more about popularity than progress - basically it is an area where the faded prom queen and "has been" quarterback breed and talk about the good ol' days while drinking Bud and smoking Marlboro's, complaining about them uppity "come he-ya's" and all them taxes they seem to want(yeah but we are the ones paying their kids/grandkids welfare bill). My husband and I are counting the days to his retirement (roughly 900 left) so we can leave.

Don't believe everything you hear. eisa sounds quite bitter and is quite the comedian with all the racial epithets they are spewing. Commute is getting better with several road projects including HOV lanes and widening of I-95. Almost everyone I have met here is pleasant and kind. Of any race. Racism? Sure it exists everywhere. An isolated few get outraged now and then and won't admit it goes both ways (not just one race against the other). Nothing to write home about. Rude people seem to meet other rude people. Here, people will greet you, hold the door for you, and will easily talk to you about their favorite Mom and Pop eateries. We have several that are not chain restaurants and they are not that expensive. Plus, did I mention the NUMEROUS wineries within a reasonable drive! A riverfront park is being built and there are frequently live concerts on the regional library steps! There is definitely people of all different incomes, races, and convictions here all throughout the city. Not sure what the eisa person is talking about. It is dated 8 years ago. I have lived here for 10 years.

Wow, I am shocked at the review above. My husband and I currently live here after 20 years of military service. We have two teenage boys and absolutely love Fredericksburg. We have experienced many different cities and cultures and both agree that Fredericksburg was our pick for retirement. It has so much to offer with it's close proximity to mountains and beaches, not to mention DC and Richmond. Yes, the cost of living is higher here and traffic can be a bear but with that comes great schools and lots to do in the community. We have a wonderful community with lots of involvement from fellow families. So sad that the writer above had such a bad experience but so many military families I know and have fallen in love with Fredericksburg and are choosing to call it home as well. Also, I am not sure why you chose to shop at Food Lion with a Wegman's right here in Fredericksburg. I agree with Dayna that Eisa may have a hard time anywhere she goes.

Ok - so 900 days have passed. Have you left? do you still feel the same way you did 3 years ago? we are considering a move for work next year. Thanks.

Contrary to what the writer above says, Fredericksburg is not a hell hole. Her description of Fredericksburg sounds like a person who either had a very bad experience here or could not be happy anywhere. Here rant is ridiculous, and should be discounted.

Fredericksburg is not a hell hole. However, I could see how someone with a silver spoon jammed up their *** might think so. Why? The way I'd put it...Fredericksburg is Virginia...not Northern Virginia. I'm not talking in terms of geography, but attitude. By that, I mean that Fredericksburg stil has southern values. People like it here for some of the reasons that people like eisa dislike it. i.e. Country music (this is the south...after all), southern heritage (i.e. Civil War reenactments), etc. In this area though, you can't expect the locals to embrace you when you roll into town with a northern attitude/superiority complex (this coming from someone that has yankee roots), and an overall disgust for the people. It's clear from your review (eisa) that you look down on the locals. The people that you think are too ignorant to tie their shoe laces in the morning pick up on that vibe. The one point that I'll agree with the original poster on is that the cost of living in this area sucks. I've lived all over the country...and Virginia...to include Leesburg, Yorktown, Radford, and Fredericksburg. While the cost of living isn't as astronomical as Leesburg, it is still well above the national average.

So Dayna, why is my opinion lesss valid than yours?? You do not defend Fred'burg you only personally attacked me. See folks this is the kind of mentality we deal with around here - can't argue a point intellegently so they resort to personal attacks. Read the other reviews, they are not that positive overall; so don't single me out.
