Corbin Ky
Star Rating - 7/9/2007
Corbin is a nice enough town to raise your kids or grandkids in, since its quiet and relatively safe of bad crimes compared to much of the rest of the USA, but if you are looking for a good job forget it. What few jobs are here will be given to the people known to the bosses. You know the old saying "its not what you know but who you know" ??
Thats very true here. There's good and bad about Corbin, just like any town in this country. There is a lot of racism, and "gold ole boy" attitude here, but maybe some people are trying to get with the times and come out of the dark ages. What I personally find to suck the worst is the utility companies, tho. Its bad enough there are 3 electric companies for such a small town, but to then not be able to choose which to use sux even worse as RECC is very expensive, and they refuse to work with people if they cant pay in full. Doesnt matter what that they buy electricity of KU for pennies nor what laws say about shutting people off, they will do it anyhow. Then the community service agencies will say either they have no funds to help or if you live too far out of the city limits they refuse to help. Im talking about CUE-they say if you are more than 5 miles from their office they cannot help even tho they are supposed to help Corbin residents. Bell-whitley never has any funds. Even Vocational Rehab doesnt do what it is supposed to do for people. You miss one appointment, even due to illness, it wont matter if you call to let them know, they will drop you anyhow. I think it is all a matter of who you know if you want and need help.
As for weather, its usually not too bad, its bearable in comparison to most of the country other than the humidity is horrible. Food is fairly inexpensive as is tobacco and pop, and most entertainment-tho there isnt much to entertain here. If you like outdoorsy stuff you will be in a good place, at least in warm weather. Churches are plentiful so pretty much no matter what denomination you are, you will find a church you like. There are a lot of schools but most have a bunch of backwards retards running them and working in them-if you are a teacher, sorry but its how I see it. I could give a hundred examples here but wont. Plenty doctors here too, some bvery good, some not, but I wouldnt take one of my cats to the local hospital-a bunch of retards there too who think they know everything and dont know squat, plus refuse to listen to what the patient says. There are plenty restaurants, and

Good review, although Corbin Independent schools are definatly the best in the area, and rank highly in the state. Not much diversity as far as religion goes, mainly baptist. Religion in a large part of the town. For the most part there is a significant gap in education levels and professionalism. Alot of very smart and distinguished professionals, but just as many if not more low life, drug abusing, deadbeats. Good town as long as you are in the right area and Sondra is very right about it being important to "know someone". Sometimes hard to move in new, if you do not know anyone, unless you are a doctor.

This review is incoherent and ill-informed. First of all, if you have RECC, you're well outside the city limits (or, KU, for that matter). Corbin's city utilities are actually some in the best in the area, and are quick to respond for repairs. Many of the other problems come from the town being effectively in 3 counties (see North Corbin), and it appears that a state law was passed (to not allow a town to be in more than two counties) specifically from keeping Corbin from annexing North Corbin. Knox County (the SE of the three) lies in a completely different district for most social services than Laurel and Whitley, so there are several things that they can't help, despite there being an office right on the Whitley/Knox line (you got to go to Barbourville if on the Knox side). And, many of the agencies spend all their money on the areas outside town, which need their help more than city residents (which is why Bell-Whitley headstart doesn't have funding for Corbin kids - Look up Williamsburg and Pineville). Corbin's schools are some of the best in the state, and the people that the poster complains about are mostly older teachers that were closing in on retirement when I went there 25 years ago (having been the victim of one of the retirees, I can sympathize, but they over-exaggerate). The Hospital is one of the Best in the region. Corbin also has one of the few professional (non-volunteer) fire departments in the region, and a large police force, so insurance rates are cheap if you live in town. Most of the really bad problems are the types living just outside the city limits, or in the Knox county part of town, which has slowly been decaying for the last 30 years, as more affluent population shifted to the Whitley county side, and to the areas just outside town in Whitley & Laurel. The Knox county side has most of the low-income housing, as well as Moore Hill - which has been literally "the wrong side of the tracks" for most of the history of Corbin. If the state would butt out of local politics, I can see Corbin & London (or, at least Laurel & Whitley counties) merging within 50 years, as they are steadily growing towards each other.
