Review of Wilmington, North Carolina

Considering relocating
Star Rating - 12/17/2015
Hello,

Just recently visited my daughter in Wilmington and visited her college. I have been considering moving here to be closer. I am currently in Las Vegas and hate it. I haven't been here long and the crime is absolutely overwhelming. I am a CA native but don't want to go back there either. Everyday someone is getting murdered here in Las Vegas and you're constantly being serenaded by the sounds of police sirens and the helicopters. I read alot of mixed reviews about the town so its hard to make up my mind. I did love the town and surrounding towns i visited while there. I felt safe, did not feel threatened in any kind of way. How is the job market, housing, etc. I have lived in many states and i'm pretty good at settling in. I appreciate any helpful advice!

Candy asses and jesus freaks. These rednecks and their families.. Goobers.. If you're single and you don't believe in invisible sky spooks and other myths that educated and enlightened adults have left behind from childhood, you will not fit in here. Spend a month in Stockholm Sweden, Berlin or Amsterdam and then compare to N.C.

I have been reading these ridiculous posts about Wilmington, and it pains me to hear the negative comments. I have lived here for over 35 years. My family relocated here from the Boston area, when my father transferred with General Electric Co. Wilmington is a paradise of the East Coast. I can only tie the negative reviews I have read to one thing... You choose the company you keep. Every city in America has ignorant fools that may be racist, or sex deviants, abusive, or whatever. I feel sorry far anyone that has posted negative reviews on this website concerning these issues. They obviously have confronted another side of Wilmington that I am not familiar with, or refuse to accommodate during my free time. Wilmington is home to a University of North Carolina, and several other college entities. Most of the people I have known, that graduate from these colleges, return as soon as they can, to raise their families. The job market is very competitive, but the job growth here is twice the national average, and is forecasted to grow over 41% during the next decade. The climate is comparable to San Diego, California, but the cost of living is much less. The beaches here are incredible. Wherever you live in Wilmington, you are less than 15 minutes away from laying on a beautiful sandy beach, and cooling off in crystal clear waters. If you enjoy boating and/or camping there are undeveloped barrier islands for incredible day excursions with your family, close enough to public boat ramps that anyone can kayak across to these islands in 15 to 20 minutes tops. Our restaurants are plentiful, with many choices. You will enjoy the historic riverfront downtown area for good food, shopping, festivals, and weekly live music. If you prefer more modern shopping, then just head over to the Mayfaire shopping and restaurant area near Wrightsville Beach. Don't even get me started on the public parks, golf, tennis, and other recreational sports that are plentiful at little or no cost to the public. There is also the Wilmington International Airport that connects through Charlotte, Atlanta, Philadelphia, and Chicago. So you don't have to travel far... if you like to travel. I sell real estate for the local Century 21 office. I would very happily send you our relocation package, to offer you more insight to our wonderful city. Just let me know if you are interested. - Jeff Myslinski, Century 21 Sweyer & Associates

Wilmington is the Cincinnati of the south. Lots of beautiful old buildings and graveyards, fabulous churches, lovely riverfront, horrid drug problem, some fine old houses fallen into horrible disrepair, a lot of crime. So if you've been to Cincinnati and know what's happened to Price Hill and Clifton Heights, that's exactly what is going on in Wilmington. And it's a damn shame. The racial unrest is pretty bad. The last time I was here, I actually left my hotel room at around 4 a.m. and got back on the freeway. It was more than I could take. Regarding the two posts below, I think both are pretty extreme, but the post by Jeff is just delusional. There is no way whatsoever that the climate of any location in the south is remotely like San Diego. I have lived in San Diego - zero humidity, most days the highs are in the high 70's and the lows at night are in the low 60's. Wilmington is nothing like that. There is no place on the Eastern seaboard like that. N. O. N. E. Wilmington is hot and muggy in the summer, cool in the winter, a little snow sometimes but not often. Before considering moving here, rent a hotel room for a week and just get the lay of the land and see for yourself. No daughter, no agenda, just go to the grocery store, walk the streets, go to church, get a burger, the normal things of life. See what it feels like to you. Hopefully you won't be loading your car in the middle of the night heading for Atlanta.

DONT DO IT.If you are a decent law abiding citizen, dont move here.EVERYONE is on drugs, extremely crowded, very high crime, racism, high cost of living with no pay, highly uneducated people,RUDE,low grade hospitals,it is dirty, clanish,if you live here you will not find work and will have to work in another city, massive child abuse, sexually perverted people, lots of predators more sharks on land than in the water.Move closer to Raleigh,Fuquay Varina is family oriented.I have lived here for 47 years,am praying to the lord to be able to move,my husband has to work cross country,if you dont already have ptsd, you will get it from living here.
