Considering a move to Rockwall
Star Rating - 8/15/2010
We are considering moving to Rockwall. We have a 3 year old daughter who was born in China. Does Rockwall offer some diversity, good schools, activities such as gymnastics, karate, etc and a good quality of life? How hot does it get in the summer? How long does to take to get to Dallas and also Garland?

We have lived here for 7 years, and are thankful we relocated here. We are adopting from Haiti, and have identified many groups that are supportive and involved. Many families here have actually adopted from China, and a major church (Lake Pointe) has a very large adoption support group. There is not as much diversity here as in Plano or Richardson (or other parts of the US) but I have not seen any racial issues and consider it open to many cultures. The schools are better than many, and all rate well academically, plus there are many private schools and home school opportunities as well. Like the rest of Texas, there are more sports opportunities than you could ever want. Most people who consider the area as expensive are probably looking at the downtown area or south of I 30, in the Heath area, or don't understand the home vaues in other areas of the US. $150,000 will get you are 4 bedroom, 2 bath, 2,300 squ ft house if you head 5 minutes farther east on I 30, with much lower taxes than in Rockwall proper. (but still Rockwall schools.) We are a single income home, definitely not making a three figure income, and love where we are. Our house values have held where other areas have dropped. It is absolutely hot in the summer, but you learn to adjust your activities. (We're from Oregon, and know about adjusting.) I disagree that it is like California, though. Lots of church activity here, not many Hispanic stores or Hispanic-oriented activities, and the traffic actually moves. 20 minutes to downtown Dallas, 45 minutes to mid-Plano, 45 minutes to DFW airport. Because it is growing rather quickly, there is new (and affordable) shopping right in town. But that also means the roads in town are under construction. One area finally finishes, and another starts up. Just the way it is. Our family (of five, soon to be seven) loves living here.
