Review of Pocatello, Idaho

Not bad, but not great
Star Rating - 4/26/2017
Okay, I'm laughing at the people who posted there being a lot of diversity here in Pocatello because they may not have lived any place else except a really small town or only been to ISU. I'm from the southeastern part of the US were there are much larger black communities , even integrated, and this really doesn't have the same culture or size comparison. But it is starting to develop. However predominate white population with a fair mix of Mexican, and native american, growing middle eastern mostly college students, and a few Asians.
I've lived in Pocatello for about 10 years, and a few other smaller places in Idaho for a total of 17 years.

Pro's-
low crime rate
great place to raise a family
more places to shop and see compared to really small rural areas.
a college that supports the technical & medical professions
down to earth
homes are less expensive
community assistance
low taxes
a few annual events
medical facilities are modern
Cons-
terrible place to be single if you want to meet more people, unless your LDS. Or you have an abandon sense of recklessness or disregard for others then you will find plenty. If your not LDS and you want to get married you may have to go online outside of this state if you have traditional marriage values, or else expect to meet a lot of people who just want to shack up.
a little clannish/clickish. Tight knit circles.
low pay, right to work state attitude. Don't expect to be treated fairly, or much less understood, or valued as employee unless your willing to kiss a##. Idaho has full right to abuse you any way they please and will get away with it.
used cars are expensive, and so is gas. The gas can be 15 cent cheaper a few miles outside of the county and not that good.
Price gauging area residents.
Doctors & nurses really suck, they tell you what they have to so that you can come back, but they don't offer more than what you can do for yourself.
public schools are below mediocre. Be prepared to teach outside of the school if you want your kids to be proficient in math & english. No real programs to interest or develp kids in their natural talents.
Meth addiction, and suicide problem. A lot of pot heads, and this is a no weed state.

I think you overstate some of the educational challenges here, as well as the medical services. True neither are stellar, but one can get educated and have good health care. People who have never spent time in the West will be surprised at the culture and politics here. As far as I am concerned neither are desirable.
