Review of Denver, Colorado

Denver is nothing more than a mid-size Midwestern city with mountains and a great marketing campaign which I fell for. What you pay for what you get is robbery. The attempts to make this place hip are tacky and pathetic. This is a very car centric city and don’t see that changing anytime in the future.

The people…Verbil Kent sums them up pretty well. I've never been around so many cowardly, passive aggressive, and aloof people in my life. Very few people here keep it real. You aren't going to fit in if you’re a Type A personality, which makes finding a job very difficult. People come here to get high, chill out, and enjoy the overrated outdoor recreation scene in the Front Range.

Almost all of the hikes here are the same thing…trudging up a mountain that is really just a massive hill. I don’t want to just hike up mountains. I want to scramble (non-technical climbing) up mountains. There is not a lot of scrambling because most of these peaks lack enough solid rock and or just aren't steep enough. I don’t care about skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, or technical rock climbing, so this area gets boring quickly. The only water activity is white water rafting, which is meh. You can hunt and or fish anywhere in America, so blah.

The job market is a mirage. For all of this propaganda about a low unemployment rate and numerous startups, most salaries are a joke when factoring in the cost of housing. Matthew from Lubbock, TX describes it best “The land of minimum wage opportunity.” The housing market is headed for a bubble. There is no way people can afford these houses on their salaries.

The weather is not that great if you like consistency. While the winter months are usually mild and sunny, the snow season runs from September to May with a real possibility to extend into June. Most of the snow is in the spring. There are not 300 days of sunshine. It is more like 270. The lack of humidity is the only really nice thing out here.

Car-centric is so very true. And also agree the housing prices here aren't in line with wages. I am moving after only 5 months here.

This thread on Colorado is the most in depth and accurate I have reviewed in many years. The truth hurts, yet it remains the truth: Colorado has become overpopulated, overrated, and underfunded. I lived in Colordo long enough long ago to be considered a native (1987-2002, except for a four year college move). I can contrast Colorado with the Southeast and Midwest, where I have lived the past fourteen years with my family. My husband has incredible opportunities in Pharma that he could not find in Colorado. At first, this disappointed me, though it didn't last. I agree that you can find nice people anywhere if you look enough, my mostly straight laced, type A, previously sun-damaged skin self prefers the Midwest now. I just turn on a UV light in the winter, take my Vitamin D, and take a break to visit a sunnier destination a couple times per year. When I tell anyone who is not a "Native" that I was raised and spent the first part of my career in Colorado, they invariably look at me like I must be higher than any designer-weed-induced-response ffor not remaining in such a lovely state. If it is a a friend giving me this response and we have twenty minutes or so, I explain how the influx of people mismatched the natural resources. Otherwise, I just explain that Colorado has had growing pains. Just to be clear, I am not referring to the pot when I mention natural resources, but the water and ecosystem. The inversion along the Front Range lends to the smog issue if those winds aren't a-blowin strong. The infrastructure was not designed to accommodate so many people, something that is hard to rectify when corporate real estate and development has the upper hand over tax revenue creation and allocation. I gathered my info from my dad and other engineers who worked on water projects in the area, a few city council members along the FR, and several park and recreation Rangers. Hopefully the sincere folks who want to hike, bike, and be merry without weed will prevail!
