Lompoc is a small town with very few decent paying job opportunities if you're not employed with Vandenberg Air Force Base or the contractors that provide support for the base. The city also seems to be a haven for people who used to live and work in Santa Barbara, but can't afford the high cost of living in Santa Barbara anymore-many Lompoc residents commute to Santa Barbara for work and return to Lompoc at night.
The city also seems to push away a lot of potential growth opportunities just so that certain members of the community can maintain the city's small-town image. In addition, a large portion (20-25%) of the city relies on public assistance (i.e illegal aliens from Mexico and other central american countries).
On the positive note, it does have a small town atmosphere that is peaceful if you stay away from the low-income neighborhoods where illegal immigrants congregate. In addition, gas and rent prices are generally cheaper than the neigboring city of Santa Maria.
