Wow, I came here looking for the town some friends are moving town and found my own town dissed. Surprise but I am enjoying a wonderful quality of life in and sure don't think it's a Bad Bad Place to be. So I guess it is all in what you want and what you value. Sure the city has a long way to go, a downtown would be nice, another used bookstore would be good etc. but we haven't been a city for very long. But... we have a well cared for 4 bdrm house built in the 60's, on nearly a quarter acre lot to garden in and enjoy. We have Great neighbors on all sides (but yes sometimes trashy people drive through the neighborhood, running stop signs, and assalting the airwaves with their thrummmming and annoying bass, scattering children and pets) Still we are just a mile from the American River where we kayak most weekends. The Parkway on both sides of the river are great for biking, rollerblading, picnicing and wildlife watching. I've got all the stores that I need in town but sure I'd love a closer Trader Joe's, but not all the congestion that comes with it and the Macy's and ad infinitum stores. I'll drive that 2.5 congested miles if I "have to have it" and go to all of them at once and hasten back home. I've got Sacramento 7 miles away for my art fix and more, all the wonders of beloved San Francisco, Berkeley etc are only 90 minutes away. Wine country is everywhere. Good colleges are all around. Great weather, affordable living. Gee, it feels like quality to me folks.
