Review of Colfax Califor, Iowa

Quality of Life Assessment
Star Rating - 2/2/2009
Foothills on western slope of Sierra Nevada Mountains, elevation 2420'.

Mild winters with some snow, but above central valley fog. Summers dry and rainless, with typical highs in the 88-92 degree range, nights in the 50s-low 60s. On I-80, about 55 miles east of Sacramento and 85 miles west (over the summit) from Reno. Small town/rural living. formerly gold mining and timber harvesting country, followed by limited ranching (limited by terrain), and finally an exurban escape for big-city refugees (starting in the 1970s).

Outdoor activities year-round, with skiing "uphill" and in the Lake Tahoe area about 1 1/2 hours distance. Commutation mainly to jobs in northeastern suburban Sacramento and Sacramento itself.

County (Placer) extends from Sacramento to the Nevada state line. Placer has been among the top 2 or 3 Califoria counties (out of 58) in percentage of Republican registered voters (along with Orange County).

Professional and service sector job base contributes to relatively high income levels. Housing prices high by national standards, but mid-range for California.

Great place to live if you want a mild climate and small town/rural living. Stunning views abound, mountainous terrain, outdoor recreation. Lots of opportunities to get together with people of similar interests, mostly in nearby Auburn (14 miles). Leave the tux behind, jeans are the garb of choice.
