Housing Crisis
Star Rating - 2/29/2016
The cost of housing on this site has not been updated.
As of 2/29/16:
Rentals:
$600/mth will rent a single bedroom in a communal home.
$1,000/mth for a 2 bedroom apt; 2 bedroom house is $1,400 and up. None of these will have a decent yard or garage, and they will be in very bad neighborhoods - not a place you want to raise your children.
A nice home with yard and garage will cost well over $2,000/mth.
Homes for sale:
Prices start at $275,000, even for homes in very poor condition.
Even at these prices, there is an extreme shortage of housing. My husband and I are professionals with good income, and we've been living in a travel trailer for a year because we cannot find anything suitable at an affordable price.

I'm looking at a house in Ukiah, Ca and it's listed $619,500 price for sqft $230.00 for 4 beds 3 baths 2,690 sqft 0.36 acres lot size Single-Family Home. The schools are rated poorly by the CA BOE state testing standards. I wouldn't think anyone would want to raise their children where the schools are so poor. It does look like a nice retirement community, unfortunately, there isn't a lot to do year round.

You are quite correct. The schools are rated poorly for a reason. Many kids are totally illiterate. Just ask the staff at the Boys and Girls Club. They see the reality each and every day. The parents drop the kids off, and expect the staff to do what the parents should be doing. The kids in Ukiah are totally ill prepared to enter the work force. They can barely spell their own names. AND.... Ukiah is isn't a nice retirement community. The city council doesn't give a snit about seniors. Pick up the phone and call the Senior Center and ask them yourselves. Ukiah needs to get it's act together, but I fear that this will never happen. The local overpaid government officials have misplaced priorities, and many believe that marijuana is their answer to prosperity. It isn't.
