I agree with the other reviewers on several points about this town. They are correct. This town is very lacking in culture. That is correct. The old attitudes still reign supreme. The downtown area is a conglomeration of attorneys offices, bars, empty building and judicial building with a few unique small businesses and restaurants that are struggling there due to high crime in the whole of town and rents going up to exorbitant amounts for that area.
If you are a college football fanatic (ECU) you will love it. This town revolves around ECU totally and that is all it seems to be about. Nothing is uniquely Greenville.
High crime. Robberies in broad daylight, home invasions, drugs, terrible drivers (and no it isn't just the college kids - many older and younger people here are horrible drivers). The streets and city planning have been terrible and are terribly designed and there is very little to do here. Main stage bands only go to Raleigh or Charlotte. If you want something fun to do, hop into your car and drive an hour and a half to Raleigh.
This definitely isn't an eclectic, diverse and unique town. Full of the same box chains that are killing the mom and pops around town that are still on their last leg. There are most definitely better schools and things to do elsewhere. Lots of low wage jobs abound unless you work for the medical center or ECU. All in all, I would not recommend this town for someone looking for a new place to call home.
However if you live and breathe Pirate sports or like getting drunk and patronizing the same retail chains found everywhere else, you will be right at home. Don't set your expectations too high for this town. You will be left sorely disappointed.
The upside is that most beaches are within an hour and a half to 2.5 hours driving distance.
