Don't move here, trust me. I've lived in NY, NJ, NM. ALL of them were far better choices. Now I'm stuck in MI for near a decade and it feels like a decade spent wasted. I'm indoors ALL THE TIME just like every other resident. People from here try to defend this state with it's "beautiful four seasons" but come on- MOST states have clear four seasons without the extremes that michigan experiences, such as PA, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, Connecticut, Virginia, and about a dozen more. It's as if the folks here believe fall and winter dosen't exist outside this state! As for wintery fun- sure, if you own a snowmobile or live near where there are man made mountains for skiing, because there is no mountains in michigan. I've barely even seen 4 hills, and I've been up and down, west and east across the entire state. I've been to every "major" city and there's just nothing here folks. There's a few pockets with money and shopping etc, like Auburn hills, but you have to have loads of money to live there- and why would you, really, when you can live in California or somewhere more pleasant for the same cost?! I live outside Ann Arbor. Ann Arborites have a superiority complex because they feel they are "so cultured" due to the University being here. But I work with the university for 8 years. Great as it is- ALL the students MOVE out of state upon graduating. Why is that? Because there is no jobs and no one wants to live here with actual skills. It's gray all the time- there's less than 100 sunny days a year. The winters are between 5-and 7 months long, and the summers are so humid and mosquito ridden you'll hide inside then too. Snow? that actually dosen't happen much around here. I am shocked after a near decade to report that out of all the states I've lived, (except NM) I've seen far less snow here than anywhere else. The lakes are pretty, sure- but LOTS of states have lakes, by the thousands- take NY for example, or the ocean coastline in New England. There is nothing here. NOTHING. The only people that love it here have family. That's understandable. If you don't, take you're money (By the way, Ann Arbor is as expensive as Parts of NYC to live in) elsewhere.

Leave it to a North Easterner to reveal their ignorance. I grew up in Michigan and have been to 48 states and 11 countries and can assure you Michigan is a far better place to live than New York and New Jersey. You couldn't pay me a million dollars to live in those dirty Zoos. I currently live in South Florida for work and the only people that arent wanted here by the locals are the New Yorkers and north easterners in general with their nasty entitlement attitudes and trashy looks. I grew up with a much higher caliber people in Michigan and would never raise children around those "kinds" of people. I am definitely planning on moving back to the glove, hopefully the New Yorkers all go back to the Zoo.

It is extremely sad here, in michigan, the fact is, you DO actually miss out on half of your life with all of the months of early darkness here. Not only that, the people are rude, or snooty, girls are always mean to other girls, more than half of these people live off of the government, yet, they act like they are so superior. Everything about this place is drab, there are no places to go, nothing is ever open, and if you do go out, be sure to be greeted with an attitude. They are.trying to rebuild this place, with bringing in new businesses, schools, housing. Why? They are throwing their time and money into a hole. A hole that is Grand Rapids, to be specific.

Sounds to me like you aren't in the right parts of Michigan. You are near Ann Arbor, not exactly a small rural town now is it? Try going north. MIchigan is beautiful, I grew up here. Up North get's a lot more snow, there are forests, rivers, lakes. Things that actual country people enjoy. Sounds like you came from a big city to me, which is fine for some people. But in the big city are you going to have people who help you out when your broke down on the side of the road? Are you going to have people be communicative and respectful in those cities? Maybe, but no where near what you will find in Northern Michigan. You just picked the wrong spot to be. Michigan definantly is not for people who want the easy road. We have Deer, Bears, Coyotes, Wolves, and the list goes on. Michigan is beautiful because it is not over run by all of the big companies trying to steal your money. It has nature and lots of it. Maybe next time you want to put down a state, you should check out more than just the big cities. Then again, some places aren't meant for big city folk. Go back to where you came from if you can not appreciate this beautiful state.

Obviously, this person doesn't like Michigan, or probably anywhere. Bummer. There's plenty here for everyone--if one actually looks. And why is it that most people seem to think that southern Michigan is representative of the entire state?
