Review of Vancouver Washing,

Much to offer - if one is wealthy...
Star Rating - 4/14/2013
I have lived in Vancouver for most of my 59 years, and am very sorry to see what has happened to what was once a pleasant place to live. As more and more people have moved here, the quality of life has deteriorated, and dramatically.

Wealthy people have purchased almost all of the nice properties; this includes those along the many waterfronts, where the public used to enjoy access for recreation. So, there are now only a handful of public access places for river and lake activities; as a result, ever greater numbers of people are crammed into ever smaller areas. Worse still, many of those who flock to the few public places left have no respect for the natural beauty of the area. Instead of picking up after themselves, they litter these places with all manner of trash, and despoil the very beauty they supposedly seek to enjoy.

Anyone who has a pet dog, and would like their dog to enjoy some sort of freedom is out of luck here. Leash laws abound everywhere, so the poor dogs have precious few places where they can run free. My own dog died in 1989, and I haven't had one since because of the terribly restrictive rules and regulations that either didn't exist or were tolerantly overlooked when my dog was alive. This is a lousy place for a dog to live - unless it has a rich owner with a huge piece of property.

Freedom for the resident people has also become all but non-existent. Big brotherism is rampant, and the local authorities seem determined to put us all in a safety bubble of their design - for our own good, of course.

I am only a few years from retirement, and hope to God that I can find a better place where I can actually enjoy the rest of my life.

First off, my family isn't rich. We still own a home, a much nicer home than we could have in Portland. A lot of people move here because rich people moving into PORTLAND is pushing people across the river just to not be homeless. I hope you aren't expecting people to be homeless so that Vancouver could remain the dying, dull place it was before. Second, the leash laws in Vancouver are no more restrictive than anywhere else. I've had dogs all my life, and, as someone who still has three, I think I'm in a better position than you to be talking about life with dogs here. You haven't had a dog is over 25 years. You know nothing about dog-life here. I have two goldens and a small dog, and they don't suffer for lack of off-leash freedom. They have so much of it that leashes are strange to them. If dog-having was so hard here, then you should ask yourself why the Humane Society here has such an easy time finding homes. Having dogs can't be so hard with the rate people are adopting dogs here.

This sounds like the norm for most cities in U.S. that are found to be desirable to live. People who are paying outrageous prices for homes (like in the Bay Area) and huge cost of living penalties, seek a more affordable area (like Vancouver) and drive the prices up. This is nothing new and will continue as our population grows out of control and we all keep fighting for the limited resources available. I am very interested in this area, because I (like millions of other people) can't afford to live where I live anymore, and need a more affordable area to retire in. I support leash laws and don't have a problem with dog owners who don't want to follow those laws finding another area to take their dogs. Perhaps Vancouver needs to invest in some dog parks like other cities who deal with this very common issue. My only concern with this are is the clouds and rain. Though I like a certain amout of it, our bodies need a certain amount of sunlight to be happy and healthy. Is it cloudy most of the time there? This is the reason I'd never move to Seattle. Drizzle every day isn't my idea of a great place to retire. Interested in other people's thoughts.

After reading your post I could not agree more.I have a friend that finally shut his business and grew up in Vancouver. The traffic and the nonsense that goes with it makes life here very different. It is so sad as I remember when you made decent wages here and you did not have to worry about a roof over your head as housing was rather inexpensive.Main Street in Vancouver should be called,"Wall Street" because it resembles it versus a "mayberry, usa",type of feel to it.Even the 2 mom and pop movie theatres have gone away and that is sad.Used to be a real nice place to live.I could remember when Mill Plain Blvd was one lane on each side and today you would get run over if you were not careful.I make a good salary and could not afford a home here.Very sad.

You wouldn't be happy living anywhere with this attitude. Nature and parks everywhere. I'm so glad I moved here, it's the prettiest, cleanest city I've ever lived in. You should move out to the country where you never have to see people and you and your dog can live all by yourselves!
