Check out Ardsley Park in mid-town. It's historic, but has a more suburban feel than downtown. You'll get trees and a yard and it's centrally located - so only 10 minutes from downtown, southside, or the Islands. Another suggestion would be Wilmington or Whitemarsh Island - definitely more suburban, but it's Savannah-suburbs, (which means still old with trees, overhanging moss, marsh, etc.)
