(Pros): I lived in Lexington for 7 years, four of those spent at university. 1. The hospitality and friendliness of people was great; people of all backgrounds (religion, politics, orientation, race, etc) mingled in my circles. [but like any major city...you betta like their sports team or keep hush about it. I'm living in New Orleans now and not being a football fan is a pain!] I learned one tradition that I maintain til this day - keeping tailgating chairs in my trunk so that I can always be ready for a social event, gathering, or holiday. Friends love inviting you over to there house [not so much down here in New Orleans; they prefer to get drinks and party.] 2. The cost of living was fantastic!!! No seriously, I'm thinking about going back. I'm missing the car insurance rates especially [I believe LA has one of the highest in the country]. 3. The economy seems solid, although I wouldn't write home about it. 4. It's very green oriented and socially conscious - lots of options for vegetarians, pescatarians, and vegan. Almost every social cause I supported tapped into the green movement...and there are lots of grassroot activity going on [mountain top removal issues, poverty, homeless, lgbt, etc]. 5. It's close to a lot of major cities, so easy traveling. I loved being able to get all the way home to the burbs of Clarksville in 3.5 hrs. (Cons): 1. It is a small big town, meaning that there's not much to do outside of the local traditions (horse scene, UK/College BBall), but with the many saved on expenses and ease of travel, getting outside of the city will be fun. 2. Economic wise you may want to go to a city/state with a more thriving economy to get some experience right after college, but you should be able to get a job regardless if you are willing to work you way up. I was offered a great entry level (master degree) position if I returned from grad school to my previous employer in Lexington. I'm kicking myself in the butt for not taking it. But overall I would rank Lexington as a great place for families and singles who love Southern culture, basketball, and low cost of living.
