Review of St. George, Utah

I have lived all over the world including Canada and South America and quite a few places in the States so have lived in different cultures and feel I can be fair in my assessment of St George. I was attracted to Utah as a teenager because of the non drinking, non smoking etc lifestyle that I preferred and wanted a change from the heavy drinking etc culture of Great Britain and France where I was raised. My husband and I are loners so being accepted by the local Mormons is not important to us as we make a living outside the state and do some work in Southern Utah.My husband is an International sculptor with pieces in several countries in public places. In between commissions he does custom stone work on homes and buildings and charges a third to a quarter less than local tradesmen. He turns up when he says and gets the job done and does not gouge people and that is very different from the local tradesmen who have poor work ethic and if you are non mormon they will purposely leave you hanging and unsure if and when the work will be done if ever. Some local trades people that my husband contracted with were caught out and busted and were heavily fined. Dishonesty is also very normal and poor treatment of non mormon trades people is the norm. Retirees that move here might love it but they do not have to work or have their children in school and I will tell you that there is discrimination but not as bad as it used to be but it is still there. We all have a right to our religous views but it is decidedly unchristian to bully and shun those who are not of your faith and this is how you know that Mormonism is not based on Christianity. The old biblical saying of Thou shalt know them by their fruits. On the other hand there are coffee shops and funky pizzerias that were not here even ten years ago and I notice much more fashionably dressed women than there used to be which is a nice change from the drably dressed Mormons who I guess think it is a sin to wear color There are more deli type supermarkets that cater to food from other countries and that is a nice change.A lot more shopping than there used to be and some very nice restaurants have opened. Most jobs in Utah are low paying and there is resentment from locals towards outsiders that appear to be affluent. There are good things about Utah as in a lower crime rate and towns very clean but the Mormons are a strange lot and act very much like cult members which they are. If you decide to move here and are non mormon quickly affiliate yourself with a church or groups that interest you so you will not feel isolated. After the honeymoon is over and you fall to earth with the realization that even thought you maybe mormon from outside the state you are still an outsider and not one of the elite families. Many out of states Mormons have moved here expecting to be swept up and held to the bosom of the members but sadly that does not happen too often unless of course you are Mitt Romney and very wealthy.

I find your comments ignorant and mis-informed. I have lived in St. George for a few years as a non-Mormon and have never had a problem and I think these people are some of the nicest I've ever lived around. Just like any community, in order to be accepted, you have to put yourself out there and make an effort to go out of your way. I have done that and my kids best friends are Mormon and they do believe in wearing color, are not a cult, and are good Christians. Perhaps you should come outside your own bubble and see for yourself. I promise, they do not bite. I think comments like this only divide and are not helpful. I have a sneaky suspicion that everything you came down on the Mormon's for are things you personally struggle with and have a hard time accepting others. I could be wrong but your statements lead me to believe you tend to label others if they do not fall in line with your way of thinking. If you truly want to get to know your neighbors better, you have to put forth a sincere effort and set aside your own tendency to judge others. Mormons are not perfect but I find them to be an overall friendly and fairly normal group of people. Actually, I find them refreshing.

your review was helpful and reflects you own personal experience. I appreciate your honesty in sharing. Utah's personal income tax would hit me harder than California. The speed limit for Big Rig trucks with two trailers is 75mph on I15, the same as for cars. Retirees and truck drivers have challenges when the retiree merges into the traffic of big rigs going 80mph. In Cali, the speed limit for these trucks is 55mph, and they slow down on I15 when they leave NV for CA.

I would like to agree with some points. My husband grew up here and I moved here after graduate school. Jobs are low paying, in fact St George was rank the second lowest wages in the US last year. My husband decided to work in a trade over a desk job because the pay was better. He is very fair in his pricing but has seen others gouge seniors and California transplants. There are some honest good guys but certainly don't trust someone if they have a picture of a family and talk about their faith in an ad, do your homework. Im not LDS, my husband was, we have had good and bad because of this. If we didn't have kids, I doubt anyone would care. There are parents who don't want their kids to play or associate outside of school with non-lds kids. There is also a group of LDS parents who are upset when they see this happen. I just tell my kids to be good kids and be an example and if someone doesn't like you because you don't attend the ward then they probably aren't good friend material. The city is slowly I mean slowly getting more stuff to do but very little is for youth, outside of sports or music lessons. The city keeps voting down family projects like an ice rink or hollywood connection or much needed retail. Small retail business and resturants fail or cant even get off the ground because of high rents. The schools are also going downhill, even the "in" area has drugs and issues the district hides.

My wife and I once lived in St. George. We loved the place but the local people were a real problem. Simply put, we were not part of the local religious persuasion, but, we are God fearing moral people and tried to be friendly. Despite that, the locals were intent on harassing us for being Jewish and we finally had to move because of that. If other non-Mormons have had a better time concerning these issues, great, in our case they were very inhospitable.

I have just moved to St. George and find this comment insulting. I am an agnostic and my wife practices Buddhism and find the people here friendly and helpful. I grew up in California and have been around Mormons my entire life and have had many Mormon friends over the years. If you are so disgusted with Mormons why would you move to Utah. All religions are a cult so Mormons are no more cultist than Catholics, Baptist or Born Agains. I enjoy the freedom of not worrying about crime and the natural beauty of the surrounding area. As far as finding tradesman to work around my house I have been pleasantly surprised at the diligence and professionalism from the workers and craftsman that I have employed.I also have lived around the World primarily in Europe. and have traveled to most of the continents with my work and really cannot complain about the culture and amenities in the area.I love St. George and plan on living here for many years to come. So my advise to you is move down the road to Las Vegas sounds like you will fit right in with all the other hustlers that have found a home there.
