Review of Winchester, Virginia

Winchester is a VERY CONSERVATIVE backwards commun
Star Rating - 12/21/2014
I would have to say I agree with much of what another individual wrote: it's like going back in time or living in a place that refuses to adapt to cultural diversity. I am not of the Christian faith and I have lived in this area for about 9 years now. After much discrimination and discussions with teachers, county school officials, etc. I was basically told that 'cultural change takes time and I might be better off somewhere else." This is a very conservative, religious (but fairly backwards), small town feel with a lot of camo-wearing hunters. I can't count the number of times I have been sitting with my two children at a restaurant and had to listen to hunting stories (with kids also as their parents bring them out hunting). The areas are fairly segregated and population is tight-knit and rude (the locals). If you were going to have to move then I would suggest the new subdivision of Snowden Bridge because it's the most diverse and many commute to Northern Virginia. With that said - the local elementary school is a bible-thumper place that 'keeps to their own.' People move here from areas that are more liberal to get back to their 'country roots and conservative values'.

Judging by the date of Julie’s post, it looks like she moved to Winchester around 2005, at the peak of the market, and has been stuck in a house due to the collapse of its value. (An assumption made due to the fact that 9 years later, she chooses to sneer at Winchester and its citizens, rather than move someplace where “cultural diversity” means living in an insular, left-wing bubble. Of course, if you look at this website’s own data, you see that Winchester’s diversity looks much like the rest of America.) I can’t imagine why she moved to Winchester, other than its more affordable housing options. But she picked the town, apparently having no familiarity with its community or culture, and then blames and insults its residents because she doesn’t share their collective values, or at least her perception of those values. My assessment of Winchester, as a non-native transplant who came here more than 30 years ago, is that it has always held to a live-and-let-live attitude, and expects that attitude to be reciprocated by others. You can be yourself...just don’t insist that everyone else should be more like you. I hope by now, Julie has moved someplace more to her liking.

sounds like my kind of place, young people today wonder why this country has so much violence, crime and corruption, well its because they have taken god out of everything so they feel they are not accountable for all the bad behavior they do. I think they think if they don't get caught then its ok to do bad stuff.

Sounds like someone has a hatred for those who hunt or wear camo. Should I have read your words any other way? Would your words not fall in line with a Conservative moving to San Fran and saying everyone is Gay and wears fruity looking clothes and everytime I take my family out to eat they are subjected to homosexual redirect? See most Conservatives back down these days but this one is no fool! What's wrong with the bible? What's wrong with rules and structure? What's wrong with Morales? That's the problem with you liberials you answer to nobody except for maybe King Obama! You have no Morales! Your 2 faced at that! You want everyone to except people for who they are except you bash Conservatives and throw dirt on them daily. Winchester is a beautifull town that is mildly diverse. We have a rather large Hispanic Community. Nobody is discouraged from moving here so diversity issues having nothing to do with racism or being backwards. I will say you must have done fairly well for yourself to afford living in Snowden Bridge. Seems like Capitalism has worked out well for someone. Now you should meet up with me and redistribute some of that wealth God knows I could afford to get ahead on some of my bills so maybe I to can live in Snowden Bridge one day. Don't listen to this smuck if you want to live in Winchester Virginia come see it for yourself. Rude enough For you Julie?

Julie, Stephens City is a lovely town south of Winchester and it is affordable too. We have a well diverse population and plenty of community activities to bring the family: library programs, parades, free concerts at the town square, community yard sales, house decorating for seasonal festivities, and plenty more. It’s there is you look for it - join a “Meet-Up” group and get to know people who enjoy your same interests. Good luck!
