Review of Sierra Vista Ariz,

Small Snow Bird Haven
Star Rating - 4/19/2014
Less than a week below freezing and less than a week above 100-degrees. Close to several wineries, old mining town (Bisbee) and Tombstone. Within 75-minutes of Tucson and airport. Close by military base. Great night sky. Quiet! Nature preserves are local or close by. Mountain views in all directions. Easy to get around town and area. New hospital under construction, should be completed in late 2015.

Any area is what you make of it. However, Sierra Vista does have its’ issues. Fry township is a blight in Sierra Vista’s eye. It is known as Ice city, not because it is freezing…methamphetamine. Drugs from Mexico are trafficked through all the border towns and sometimes through Sierra Vista or Bisbee. Meth is a major problem and with five law enforcement agencies (FBI, DEA, Boarder Patrol, Local police, and county sheriffs) they can do very little to slow the trafficking. This town is only here because of Fort Huachuca. If Fort Huachuca were to every close, this town would disappear. It will not close anytime soon. The schools are terrible and have low standards. As kids move up in grade, there is little choice in where to send them. If you are looking for anything specialized, you have to travel an hour and half to get to your destination in Tucson. This place is a retirement/military community and they do nothing to entice culture or family life. Cost of living here is higher when examining housing and gas. Housing here is more expensive than Tucson or Phoenix. Gas prices are always 15-20 cents per gallon higher, when compared to Tucson, because of the town’s location. I am still wondering what the factor is in the more expensive gas and I understand transporting cost. But 15-20 cents more per gallon? Which in turn raises cost in groceries. Most of the time it is quite and much cooler than Tucson or Phoenix, on average five degrees cooler when compared to Tucson and ten degrees when comparing it to Phoenix. State and local government services lack quality, especially in Cochise County because everything is spread out. There is something in numbers…hmmm. Teenagers can get into a lot of trouble here. You have to find extracurricular activities they can concentrate on to take up their time. The city offers very little for teens. The one high school is great for its’ fine arts and JROTC program. Their sports teams are not that great because of parent interference. There are plenty of martial arts programs and one gymnastic center. However, because we are somewhat isolated it may cost you more. Jim mentioned the new hospital, great an added cost to the tax payer. They are trying to entice a lot of medical specialists to return. Within the last couple of years there was an exodus of medical specialists. But hey, it will be larger and is expected to provide more care. Maybe for all the illegal’s that try to cross the border during the summer time they will be able to treat them.
