The Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area is located in northern Alaska along the banks of Yukon River stretching across 121,000 square miles making it the largest census area in both size and population at over 5400 people according to 2019 estimates. Its residents are made up largely by Indigenous groups such as Gwich'in Athabascan whose traditional lifestyles remain mostly intact relying heavily on subsistence fishing for their livelihood as do many others living here taking advantage of abundant natural resources found throughout this vast landscape including its large caribou herds which roam freely across this region’s vast open space unspoiled by man's influence for thousands of years.
