Lewiston, ME
No place I would recommend -
6/24/2013Despite years of efforts to revitalize Maine's second largest city, it seems Lewiston will always be joked about as the "armpit" of the State. City and State leaders have dedicated a lot of time and money to creating "luxury" type hotels, restaurants, and so called culture, but what is not changing ( and unlikely ever will)is the population here. Although there are a number of intelligent, driven, successful, and good people here, Lewiston is known for it's crime, bad education system, and increasingly deteriorating downtown area with more and more condemned and abandonded buildings. Over the last several years there has been a large influx of Somalian immigrants move into the area. Although the tensions have settled down immensely, there is still some controversy regarding that issue. It has been said it's easy to get Welfare here - that was the reason for the large number of them that moved here - that has angered many taxpayers. I have also been told otherwise. Even the City's Mayor has been quoted on more than one occasion making statements against the Somalian community.
As a mother of two children I am unhappy with the education system in the area, and I feel there is no real culture - we have to travel to other areas in Maine for he kids to experience any real beauty, art science, culture, or have any entertainment worth talking about. Needless to say, I joined this site to explore relocation opportunities.
