1/23/2010The 15 to 1 ratio is the total number of teachers to the total number of students. It does not correspond to the ratio in the classroom. 15 to 1 is about average around the country with an average of about 25-30 to 1 in the classrooom.

1/23/2010A little more than half of the people in Corpus are Hispanic. Most have been in Texas for generations and are as American as the whites. For most, their first language is English. I have run into more non-English speaking Hispanics in Northern Virginia than in Corpus. Unfortunately, I live in Virgina outside D.C. because of my job.

1/23/2010First, the fact that you were the victim of ONE nonviolent crime does not mean there is "very high crime". Second, while there is a large Mexican-American population (most whose families have lived in Texas since it joined the US) and you do hear Spanish frequently, English is, by far, spoken much more than Spanish. There is no part of the city where you only see signs and labels in Spanish. As far as discrimination against whites, Corpus is no better or worse than other places when it comes to prejudice. Maybe the Latinos treated you poorly because they sensed your bigotry. Third, I’ve been swimming in the gulf hundreds of times and only got stung by a jelly fish once.

1/21/2006Yes traffic is terrible in and around Vienna but it is no worse than the rest of the Washington metro area. If you hate traffic, stay away from Washington DC.
