Webster CDP, MA

Living in Webster - 6/14/2013
I moved to Webster about 3 years ago now, after having lived in many different parts of the State of Ma. I was looking forward to seeing how living in Central Ma. ( a part of the State I had never been to before)was going to be. I was accepted into a housing program at North Village ( I have heard numerous people refer to North Village as the projects of Webster). Having been to many different projects in this state and other states, I was hard pressed to agree with the opinion that North Village was anything like the projects that I had seen, at least on the outside appearance alone. It looked more like condo's or town houses to me.
After residing here for 3 years I had come to the realization that when people were referring to North Village as "the projects", that they were actually referring to the residents who live here's mentality and attitude's or behaviors. I have never lived with a more ignorant, undereducated and materialistic bunch of people in my life. The expression "there goes the neighborhood" has to have originated here. Besides the complex itself the town is what I would call a ghost town...for the most part the downtown area is a bunch of abandoned rundown and boarded up buildings. Weather it was the recession that caused this or something else I don't know, but about a third of the downtown area consists of these abandoned buildings. I don't know how they can justify a multi-million dollar project for a new police station with the down town area being in such disrepair??!!
There is nothing to do here and the transportation( bus) runs at the bare minimum. Not at night and not on Holidays or Sundays. The buses just started running on Saturdays this year. They make it very difficult to even get out of town to go somewhere else such as Worcester ( the biggest major city close to Webster)or Boston.
I would not recommend this town to anyone as far as buying real estate or renting property. From what I have heard from other parents the Webster public schools are horrible. There are also a lot of sex offenders in this town, just watching the local news channel will tell you that much.
Because I got housing here my rent is very cheap so I don't see myself moving anytime soon. So regardless of how bad it is here I'm kind of forced to stay here...it's all I can afford right now. I keep to myself, and take my daughter off the property and out of the town as much as I can. For the most part I have no problems with anyone because I don't get involved with the Village drama and gossip that goes around all the time here. If you just stay to yourself you won't have any problems, but you basically have to be pretty anti-social with all your neighbors...just keep it at hi and bye. I make my friends elsewhere.
Another big problem that I notice a lot in this town is the lack of supervision and parental concern the parents in this town have for their children. I am always seeing 4 and 5 year old children running all over the neighborhood with no one watching them. Kids of all ages are riding around on bike's, skateboards, and scooters with no helmets on, and I have never seen more parents lose their children as I see in this town and complex. There seems to be a total disregard for their childrens welfare and well being, it's really quite sad.
After all the bad points about this town I would have to say that the highlight for me in the town of Webster would be Memorial Beach. I feel very grateful to have this lovely lake that I can either walk or ride my bike into for free. I discovered the lake shortly after moving here, and my daughter and I have enjoyed it ever since. You use to be able to grill your food here, but they took that privilege away the summer after I moved here. People not picking up after themselves or putting their fires all the way out. I have enjoyed swimming and relaxing at the Memorial Beach every Summer, and it is most definitely the highlight of this town.
If there's any other questions you have about living or visiting Webster just email me and I would be happy to answer whatever questions I can.
