Lincoln, NE

not too bad of a place - 10/6/2009
I've lived in lincoln for over 20 years now, and I must admit Lincoln is not a place that I want to wpend the rest of my life in. Its not that it is a bad place to live, but the opportunities in Lincoln are very low. The infrastructure of Lincoln is very poor, bad road construction that takes years to complete a simple 200ft of road, potholes all over the place that are never fixed, and due to the low level of tourist attractions in Nebraska, it will be very rare for any large business to set up in Lincoln. The city management is poor, in which past parts of the city used to flourish with businesses, hotels, and resturants, now contain run-down buildings with adult film/book stores next door. The lack of air travel used by the Lincoln Airport is also poorly managed, with flights leaving from omaha range from $200-$300 cheaper.
Not to mention the "good-life" states weather, the most unpredictable weather I believe to be in the US. The only state I believe where the weather man can predict snow on the day after christmas and we get 71 degree weather and sunny, then April rolls around and we have a foot of snow on the roads, in which most roads do not get plowed, but rely on traffic to just pack it in. Granted, the cost of living in Lincoln is very cheap compared to the rest of country. You can be high-upper class with a house costing $300K on a golf course, or still live very comfortable in many nice homes that can start at $130K.

There is a high crime problem of course. All the convenient places to live(close to the university, downtown, schools) are infested with high crime rates, so they aren't able to flourish the way they should. Even with a police station right across the street from apartments, it doesn't deter vandalism, assaults, etc.

If you want a low cost of living and don't mind crazy weather, Lincoln, ne is for you. But if you're like me and want opportunities, excitement, etc, you're better off heading to another place.
