Franklin, TN

I love Franklin, Tennessee!
- 8/6/2006
I live here and after 39 years in the midwest wish I would have moved here sooner.

These are the pluses of living here:
Better schools
Better attitudes
Beautiful landscape
No State Income Tax
Utilities cheaper
Housing cheaper in some areas
No wall to wall subdivisions
Historical Preservation top priority
It's like living in Mayberry
Job market is booming in Nashville which is only a 20-30 minute commute-new Nissan plant in Franklin, Saturn in Spring Hill, Dell in Nashville and more
It is VERY safe-the other night we forgot and left our keys in the front door of our apartment. They were still in the door the next morning. We lived in Indianapolis before and we would have had "company" if we would have done that there!

Here are the negatives:
Sales tax is 9 1/2% BUT you can choose what you do or do not buy-remember your paycheck will be BIGGER here-also, if you like bulk shopping on taxable goods, you can cross over into KY which is only 1 hour north OR there is Sam's and Costco.
Groceries are a tad bit more expensive here BUT there is always WalMart, Big Lots has groceries as well as Dollar General and places you wouldn't dream of AND there are fruit and veggie stands all over the place for good, fresh produce. And there is still Costco and Sam's.

It's just an incredible place to live. My son hated school until we moved here. He is in a year round school and he loves it and is thriving. Churches are abundant. Family feel just about everywhere you go. Lot's of inexpensive and free things to do. We go walking downtown every Saturday night and take the Enjoue bicycle carriage ride for a nominal tip. He gives us a history lesson each week and takes us somewhere different each week as well. Hmmm...I love it here.

I agree with all negative comments-have lived here

It's terrible. I have a college degree and it means little here. I am also a single parent. Son had accident last year and I am getting no help from hospitals or state. Getting an attorney to fight disability so son can have surgery he needs. Losing home because of accident, high medical insurance rates, property tax increases, downsized twice (once with state and once for I.T.). Crime is high. Live in a very nice suburb on Southeast side. Used to be safe but now inner-city people moving in and it is very unsafe. Scared to sleep at night sometimes. Schools are overcrowded and teachers are losing their jobs. Property taxes outrageous. It's crazy here. And climate is becoming terrible. Never seen so many tornadoes before. Don't move here.

Living here has become a financial nightmare
- 4/28/2006
We are losing everything. I have a bachelors degree and twelve years of business experience. I have been downsized twice in two years. My son had an accident. Our insurance premiums skyrocketed. Property taxes shot up and now I am losing our home. After second downsizing I lost our insurance premiums and now my son has been denied disability twice. He still needs insurance because the doctors here and a major hospital in Indianapolis couldn't figure out how to heal him. I have lived here for most of my 39 years and I never remember it being this bad. As soon as I find a job out of state...we're outta here!!

Terrible place to live-no opportunities anymore-po
- 4/16/2006
Lived here for 39 years. The first 34 were good. Now, politicians have chaged all of that. The brain drain is worse and I plan to be one of those draining soon. I have a college degree and a child. Neither are welcome in this state. Plus, it is getting more polluted and the climate is becoming terrible (never seen this many tornadoes before). Leaving because there is nothing left here for me or my child. It's sad. Never thought I would feel this way.

Politicians were worried about the brain drain but they are causing it to happen. I have lived here 39 years and the last five have been the worst I have experienced. I have a college degree but nowhere to use it. Property taxes are high and most people here are resorting to homeschooling because most of the teachers have lost their jobs and most school programs (art, music, computer tech, etc.) have been cancelled. We are suffering from inflation here whether anyone wants to admit it or not. And the tornadoes have become worse here over the past four years. Climate is changing. If you hate tornadoes, you might want to reconsider moving here as well. I'll miss Indiana when I move (the way it used to be, that is). But I'm not looking back.

Indiana is no longer the great state it used to be
- 4/7/2006
I have lived here for 38 out of my 39 years of life. I have a college degree and am a single Mom. I have gone from riches to rags in a short time because my son had a terrible accident last year and 6 months before that I was downsized and then this January I was downsized again (outsourcing). The economy is horrible. Medical insurance rates are horrible. Property taxes are outrageous. Income taxes are terrible. I have been forced to sell my home. Hospitals even Riley Hospital) cannot figure out how to heal my son. He still has his injury from over a year ago.

Politicians run this state (Democrat and Republican alike). If you are not involved in politics you CANNOT win here. Trust me I know, I worked for the state for quite a while. Our last Governor was terrible (a Democrat) and our new one is as well (he is Republican). The schools are all overcrowded. As a matter of fact, hundreds of teachers lost their jobs last year and now there are more on the list. Once I am able to find a job out of state we are out of here. We cannot survive in Indiana much longer.
