Granted we all have are own opinions, however some are just more short sighted than others. I will continue through and contradict just about every point that was made in the comment dated 4/24/2006. Lets begin with the taste of the water, I myself live in the city of Appleton, have my water provided by the city of Appleton, and find it to taste just fine. Perhaps if you live in another outlying community things could be different. All I can say though, after living in LA and then Milwaukee it is refreshing to actually be able to drink the water from the tap if I so desire. And its amazing to see the water actually clear, lacking any type of haze.
Now onto the issue of Radon. Perhaps this link will clear up your statement on this problem. Check it out, it is a naturally occuring gas that is present not only here but also out East. Perhaps here in the Fox Valley there is just a greater concern of this issue. http://www.epa.gov/iaq/radon/zonemap.html
Regarding the schools I find that my children are receiving an excellent education. They have teachers that want to interact and care about their progress. Of course the schools could use additional funding, but are you willing to pay? Perhaps the deeper issue does not involve the schools.
The factory situation is easily explained through the areas history. This area was built around the paper industry, hence the strong presence of blue collar industries. When these factories were first being built, the workers built homes nearby as a convenience. In my opinion those who built near there places of employment had a better grasp on the issue of urban sprawl, better than we will ever have.
Perhaps you would enjoy the area more if you leave your stereotypes behind and pursue what the area has to offer. Yes there is a strong presence of hunting and drinking, but open your mind and see what else there is. Enjoy the Performing Arts Center, take a drive to Door County, get involved in one of the thousands of programs that are available for your kids, I could go on. Coming here from the big cities was the best thing I could have done for me and my family, we will never leave. We have felt extremely welcomed since day one.
