I love San Francisco. Having been born and bred here I've experienced what several neighborhoods have to offer and how great they can be. The mission "La Mision" is one of the more colorful neighborhoods probably most popular for its ethnic food offerings (many Salvadoran restuarants, taquerias, etc.). You would hardly make a bad choice if in the neighborhood. That said, it is good for visiting, not good for staying. Two particular streets to stay away from are 16th and Mission and 19th and Mission, lots of shady characters (homeless, delusional, drug addicts, prostitutes, etc.), unless you consider yourself to be brave!
