Where have all the small towns gone -
7/31/2006what can I say. It is always hot. Nov thru Feb it is wonderful. The rest of the time, yuk. The Coachella Valley has grown so quickly. The jobs aren't here to support buying homes which start as they say in the high 300K and that is on the marginal sides of the valley. Indio is only about 8 miles away from Indian Wells but as far as the economy there is a gap larger than the Grand Canyon. Most of the population in Indio is self employed either as gardners or domestics. The largest employers are the Water District as well as the school district. The rest is service employees. There is not that much agriculure or packing sheds left.

10/30/2005I've lived in Indio for over 25 years. I have seen the surrounding communities grow and improve their tax base tremendously. It is as if Indio is really an oasis where nothing happens. Communites that for years were known as undesireable have grown, attracted new housing, business, and a myriad of other amenities. The only growth/increase has been in crime. Definitely not a place to retire even though the weather is great in the winter.
