The Economy in Austin -
2/16/2011Austin, Texas is an attractive place to be, with "Keep Austin Weird" being the theme for the city. Unfortunately, the past few years, Keeping Austin Weird is not doing much for those in the city without jobs to support their families. Although the jobless rate is down, you would be wise not to be mislead. It is not unusual to find one with a bachelor degree, who just a few years ago enjoyed a salary of $80,000 or more annually working as an hourly employee at the local home improvement store, or working behind the counter at the Mcdonald's. Many have multiple jobs, just to make ends meet, and keep food on the table and a roof over their head. Although the jobless rate may have declined, this does not mean that the jobs are plentiful, and this does not mean that these jobs are enough to support a household.
With many of the schools in the city being slated for closure, another several hundred degreed individuals will soon find themselves with no way of supporting their families.
At any corner, you will find individuals holding signs asking for work, or a donation in hopes of getting their basic needs met. Many of these individuals are homeless for the first time in their lives, and have found themselves as well, slipping through the cracks of society, and calling the bridge or cardboard box home. Aside from this,if you are fortunate enough to be in the medical field, there will always be a place for you in Austin, or any other city for that matter. There are also lots of arts, music, and plenty of fun in the Austin area.
