Whitney, TX

fun Lake town for vaca not to live in - 12/3/2008
My family moved to Whitney 10 years ago because we wanted to get away from a big city. Whitney is a lake town and a tourist spot during the summer months. The population is more like 8,000-10,000 because a lot of people live outside the city limits close to Lake Whitney. It's very conservative and not a hotspot for singles.

The school system is awful so I wouldn't suggest sending your kids there. A lot of people I know put their children in Clifton schools (about 15 minutes away).

There is nothing to do in the winter and it gets really boring. It has grown rapidly in the 10 years I've lived there but it's still just a sleepy little country town. There is a Brookshire's but it takes 15 minutes to get to a Walmart (Hillsboro) and 45 minutes to reach the next decent sized city (Waco). There is a whopping total of 3 red lights and the whole town shuts down at 8-9 pm.

Overall: Fun lake, good housing prices, no traffic, decent employment rates, very religious, tight knit community, good weather, low cost of living. Bad schools, mainly lower class citizens, boring, long commute to metro, Far right, conservative, narrow minded, and even sometimes bible thumping people.
