Pottsville, AR

What it's like to live in Pottsville and Russellvi
- 4/26/2007
Pottsville, Arkansas is a quiet, friendly little town with history and excellent schools. The people are friendly down-home country folk. They just built a new Jr High and High School. My own children attend the Elementary and I'd be hard-pressed to try to find a better one in Arkansas.
There are lots of nice houses available for rent or sale. It is pretty cheap to live here, compared to other areas of Arkansas. For example, we are about 1 1/2 miles from the elementary school and our newer (2004) three bedroom brick home with a two car garage rents for $650 a month.
Pottsville is close to Russellville where there are several good restaurants and places to shop. They are in the process of putting in an IHOP and a Starbucks. I have personally attended ATU and it is an excellent University. It has a huge campus and they are constantly adding new buildings and new fields of study. The staff there are friendly and helpful.
There's very little crime in Russellville and crime is virtually nonexistant in Pottsville.
On the down side, there seems to be an abundance of unskilled workers in Russellville and the low pay and competition for these jobs makes it rather difficult for many people. There isn't much work to be found in Pottsville and most people go to Russellville to work.
For healthcare, there are quite a few good clinics with reasonable fees. There's also St. Mary's Regional Hospital where you can get excellent care, but their fees are high as cat's backs.
Recreational Opportunities include Lake Dardanelle, which is inspiringly beautiful, the Arkansas River, the Bona Dea walking trails and Mt. Nebo State Park with it's breath-taking views off of high cliffs.
It's REALLY HOT here in the summer! Many days are 90 degrees and over and sweltering humidity. I find it nearly unbearable to be outside in that kind of heat. However, the winters are very mild. It doesn't get very cold and we rarely get snow. When we do, it's usually melted the next day. For example, the kids buit a snowman one day this winter (2006) and the next day his head fell off and all that was left were a few melted white blobs. He didn't stand much of a chance.
I hope this helps y'all to get a feel for the place and good luck!
