Boston, MA

Agree with Shelly. Boston is one of those liberal, smuggly Democratic Party ruled, progressive, narrow minded cities, like San Francisco, that one must avoid whenever possible.

Boston politics - 8/29/2010
Boston is overated. It is a bastion of liberals, progressives, mindless Democrats who do not think for themselves, but keep the same Democratic party scoundrels in office year after year. Then they wonder why the taxes are high, corruption is rampant. Despite this, Bostonians think they are superior to the rest of the country, more enlightened and progressive, but what they are in effect is a bunch of smug and narrow minded elitists. Boston is a city in which the Democratic party is so entrenched, that there is no competition. Even indepedent candidates, unless they are indeed progressives, do not stand a chance. If a rare Republican is elected, he or she better be pro-gay, pro-abortion, a free spending big deficit Democrat at heart. Thank God much of the country is not like places like Boston. You have to go west of Boston to find sane, reasonable, patriotic, and real Americans.

Oro Valley, AZ

Oro Valley, AZ - great place to live - 4/25/2010
I am a retiree from New York. I moved to Tucson two years ago. Now we are about to buy a home in Oro Valley, just north of Tucson. I love this area. The mountains surrounding Tucson and Oro Valley are beautiful. You can see them when you are driving up Oracle Road and from the parking lot of some of the well maintained shopping centers. All the stores and restaurants you will ever need are here. People are from all over the country. Most people are friendly and helpful. I think the beautiful weather makes people more pleasant. Home prices are reasonable. With all the senior citizens coming and going, you can still get a good deal. Taxes are not bad. The state parks are great for hiking and walking. I am a short sleeve person and haven't worn a heavy coat since the day I arrive here at the Phoenix airport. The most I have needed for a very brief period in winter was a light light jacket. I come from New York, so I know what cold weather is like and dampness. The weather is dry, so arthritis improves if you have problems. There is no perfect place on earth. The desert has its own beauty and I like it here. By the way, if you want to rent here in Oro Valley, you can find a nice place a two bedroom for about 7-800 dollars a month. Even the apartments are ok if you don't want to buy. The economy is hurting here with jobs, like elsewhere in the country, but if you have a pension and social security, you can survive better than back east or in NY. There are jobs though, depending on what field you are in. If you move here, you will appreciate what Arizona has to offer. Good scenery, mountains, great parks, and good quality of life. I am a social conservative in politics and find likeminded people here, but if you tend to be liberal, you can find plenty likeminded, especially at the University areas. I know this sounds like an advertisement for Arizona, but I guess it is just my enthusiasm. Also, as a Christian, there are all denominations here. What I like about Arizona also is that in Oro Valley and in north Tucson areas, there is almost no street litter, unlike all the trash I saw in NY, on Long Island, in the boroughs of Bklyn and the outskirts, and along the tracks while riding the LIRR to the city. The air is pretty clean. As for the hot summers, so what. It gets hot, true, but at least you don't usually have 100% humidity and bugs eating you alive outside. I will take Arizona summers to NY summers anyday. You have to use common sense, drink fluids, go to the shade when it is 105 degrees, and keep your car in good working order. Common sense. Also, when you go outside, be careful about possibly running into a rattlesnake. They tell you (again common sense)stay on the trails, don't try to pick up a snake, use a flashlight if walking at night outside. Most people rarely ever see a rattlesnake and few people get bit. Don't bother them and you will get along fine. I have met people here who have been in AZ for 20 years and saw one or two snakes at most, usually during a desert walk. Anyway, like I said, there are no perfect places to live. In Florida you have to deal with alligators, poisonous snakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, etc. And you have miserable humidity in areas of the east coast. In Arizona, at least you won't see a hurricane and a tornado or an earthquake. The best thing to do, if you are considering a move here, come and check it out and see if it a place for you to consider retiring or working.

Dallas, TX

Texas is probably better than going to someplace like Boston. There are too many deluded liberals and nasty people in Boston, especially the obnoxious Red Sox Fans. But I say this because I am a former New Yorker and a die hard Yankee fan. I live in Tucson and I like Red states where people have values and common sense.

Tucson, AZ

general impression - 5/25/2008
I am a 63 year old retired NYS employee who lived and worked in Suffolk County, Long Island,NY until recently relocating to Tucson, AZ....I still have some family on Long Island, and I can't say it was a bad place to grow up, however, the cost of living was always high and I often worked two jobs to afford to stay there. I owned a home and the property taxes were high, as well as utilities. I worked so hard that I didn't really enjoy much leisure time. The minuses about Long Island were the heavy traffic, nasty drivers, lots of rain and humidity, icy roads in winter, etc. The pluses were the beaches, LI sound, some decent friendly people and co-workers, pretty and green neighborhoods, good police presence and good schools. Now that I moved with my wife to Tucson, AZ, I am so very glad we relocated. It is beautiful here, with mountains and less stress, good weather, lovely scenery, and all of the amenities we had on Long Island, except maybe the Italian food here is not as good, and there are few good pizza parlors and deli's. Otherwise, there are many good restaurants, Starbucks, beautiful shopping centers, clean, and hardly any litter at all. People here are from all over the country, so you don't feel like an outsider. Rents are very reasonable and other costs, except food, are lower than long island prices. I like this place and know for sure I will never move back to Long Island. It is too bad we didn't relocate here sooner. I would recommend anyone considering a move to AZ, pick Tucson over Phoenix. It is much nicer. Try to move in the north Tucson area, preferably the foothills, but there are other areas you might check out. It depends on your individual needs, job, location preference, etc. But know for sure, Long Island was anything but paradise. Tucson comes closer to being a livable area. Good luck. Any other comments about scorpions? I am from the east coast and not used to those critters. Am considering a move to AZ in 2008, but the idea of a scorpion infestation might change my mind.

Prescott, AZ

quality of life in Prescott - 8/1/2007
I am interested in feedback of a general nature and some specific opinions about Prescott, Flagstaff, Tucson, and Sierra Vista, Arizona. I live on Long Island, NY, and am a lifelong New Yorker considering relocating. I don't want to buy a house, as I would prefer to rent an apartment or condo and see how my wife and I like it. I am almost 63 years old, not rich, just a working stiff with a modest pension from a NYS civil service job held for 35 years. If anyone would like to share their opinions about these areas, I would like to hear what you have to say. Thanks.
