Stanardsville, VA
Interesting town -
11/1/2011We are renting a house in the boondocks here in Stanardsville, and consider it an unusual cultural experience. The people are very friendly and the town is quaint. There is the Greene county pharmacy that sells everything from fresh eggs, pearl necklaces, drugs, and candy. We are at the foothills of the mountains, so the view is nice. Overall, seems like a nice place to settle. There are jobs down in Charlottesville and at the Fontaine Center on U.S. 29, but traveling down there is difficult because of traffic on U.S. 29. It is scenic here with rolling hills. Seems a little pricey for a small town, though.

Asheville, NC
Asheville has pros and cons -
10/22/2010We investigated Asheville, and found the cost of living at this point to be at the national average. Real estate has flopped like everywhere else, so very reasonable cost of living. The mountain people were excited for awhile during the time when prices were going up, but now their bubble is burst. Billy Bob can't cash in his shack to buy an annuity to live on. Shucks, darn. In fact, Billy Bob not only can't sell his shack/home, but now he is having trouble finding work. There are some beautiful homes there for sale that have been built in the last 10 years that will probably sell before Billy Bob's mountain shack, and some on very large lots outside of the city. There are very good restaurants there, nice hotels, and good Bible churches. We find this town quaint, and plenty of opportunities. However, N.C. taxes are bad for retirees (extra capital gains tax, income tax, bad sales tax), so can't say that Asheville is an ideal retirement spot. If North Carolina would get rid of taxes like Florida did, it would be booming. If they'll ever vote in a Democratic governor........
Brevard, NC
re: re: - 4/2/2009 -
10/22/2010I have visited Brevard, and have lived in Cary (next to Apex). For a family, can't imagine moving to Brevard because there are no jobs. Perhaps if you are a nursing assistant, but other than that, are no jobs. Apex and Cary have plenty of families and activities, and more jobs than most places in the U.S.. Being that you are single, you would have to be in a large place like the Apex/Raleigh areas to meet other single adults.

10/22/2010It has stayed small. In fact, they have lost population from 2000-2010. Sounds like no growth to me.

re: clarrification - 3/30/2008 -
10/22/2010THe good news - mountain folks are having to lower housing prices because there is no demand for Brevard anymore. There is now plenty of affordable housing there. If beautiful houses in Asheville aren't selling, why would anyone move to Brevard? It is a cute town, and feels quaint, but isn't this what every other mountain town is? The main street has overpriced restaurants that were disappointing. I can understand some of the high cost because trucks have to drive way up into the mountains to deliver, but still does not make total sense. We did not find good restaurants anywhere around Brevard, but a drive to Asheville solves that problem. There was a good lunch buffet way up Country Club Road, but I have heard that it closed (sad!). There are several good lunch/sandwich places around Broad Street downtown, with nice people working there. I think that Brevard needs to get the bulldozer over part of the town, rebuild on the plowed over land with something new and nice, and they would attract more people to live there. Looks like the population has dwindled over the past 10 years.
Melbourne, FL
Mixed feelings about Melbourne -
10/21/2010Melbourne has some nice folks. The culture here is pretty simple, and the people have low expectations in life. That is somewhat relaxing to us because we are from a competitive environment in North Carolina. Don't be deceived by the cost of living index. It is very cheap to live here, but you are living around a very uneducated population. Naturally, there is not much demand for nicer housing because of this demographic. There is plenty of cheap housing in Melbourne and surrounding county, but most of it should be bulldozed over because it is not inhabitable. Just a few things to keep in mind. They have wonderful local TV broadcasts - includes a classical music station that we watch, foreign TV station, lots of PBS, Christian TV, etc..

Palm Bay, FL
re: Palm Bay Dump - 5/13/2009 -
9/25/2010He pretty much says it all. It has got to be the scariest place yet that we have seen in Florida. About as working class, low class, as a town can get. The housing is so old, worn out, moldy, that there is likely no decent housing to find. He is right - there are some new cheap houses built during the 2005 boom that are uninhabited. We're getting tired of the nasty air in Brevard county from all of this chemical fragrance stuff pouring out of peoples' homes. It is nauseating, and no where to breathe clean ocean air here.
Cocoa, FL
re: re: - 4/2/2009 -
9/25/2010You are kidding. We are from the CAry area, and would not even begin to compare Cocoa, Florida, to Apex and Cary. The population demographics are like night and day. People interested in Cocoa must be attracted to the super low cost of living. You will not get that in Cary and Apex, North Carolina.

9/25/2010This person must have been smoking a strange pipe. I agree with some other comments that it is mostly white trash types here. The average IQ must be well below average. Very working class. Not many retirees here like the rest of Florida. Lots of pollution from people here enamoured with cheap fragrances in consumer products. Downtown Cocoa (historic Cocoa) is now getting filled with artificial fragrance so badly that I felt choked the last time I was there. Cocoa and Brevard county are wonderful if you need some government aid because the county provides all sorts of it to many citizens. If you aren't on government aid and need cheap housing and a low cost of living, then it could be the place for you. Don't expect to meet people with much thought in their head, though.
Rockledge, FL
tiny lots - not great -
9/18/2010Rockledge and Viera have tiny housing lots, but the land here is very cheap. Is strange that builders would not have had large lots for most developments. As a result, there is terrible laundry product (the recent stinky toxic stuff) spewing out into the neighborhoods. The air around Viera, especially, is terrible because of this.
You are close to the beach, which is positive. The county is very poor, so most people here don't have money to improve their properties. If you have any assets, you don't want to move here because of all the deadbeats - you'll be paying for them.
If this town and county were not so polluted with all these sickening chemicals, would rate it much higher. Still would have a hard time rating it very high because of the low income.
Rockledge, FL
If you like living in a chemical slew - Rockledge -
9/17/2010There is a large Walmart in the middle of Viera, close to Rockledge, and seems that everyone shops there. They purchase loads of scented laundry products, air freshener, and scented candles and "plug-ins." Have never lived around people so stupid that they don't realize that this stuff is toxic. Everywhere we go, the air is contaminated from their dryer vents blowing this junk out into the air we breathe. Is a tremendous problem in the high density neighborhoods in Viera and Rockledge. On top of that, have not been to anyone's house here where they don't contaminate their household air with these scented products. Is really gross. When you have people so stupid, they are more gullible to marketing, so P&G and Walmart have these folks in the bag. It is so bad that I avoid the Viera/Rockledge area and spend much more time in Melbourne, where the environment is better. It is a growing problem, but when you have a high population of uneducated types like Viera and Rockledge, it will be much more of a problem. They have even contaminated their beaches here with all that scented crap on their clothes and body. No more fresh, salty beach air here in Brevard county.
