Rochester has a really suburban feel (except in certain dangerous neighborhoods) but it does have some of the culture and activity of an urban area. There's a healthy gay culture here, and a few good nightlife spots. The various colleges and universities in the area provide some venues for cultural events such as art shows, big speakers, and bands. Buffalo is also very close, so its greater diversity of activities is an option.
