Very hit or miss. -
4/10/2014I've lived here pretty much all my life, and I have to say, I'm ready to get out. I'm not sure if the crime here has just skyrocketed over recent years, or if I was just sheltered because I happened to grow up in a relatively nice neighborhood that no one had any reason to pass through (so not much in the way of "crimes of opportunity"). Probably a bit of both. In any case, I live near the Square now (the historic area), and I hear gunshots at night fairly regularly. There always seem to be dogs running around loose, and we've seen multiple people digging through our trash. I'm scared to go on walks by myself, especially in the late afternoon and early evening. Anyway, if you're thinking about moving here, be very careful about which neighborhood you choose. In a lot of areas, you can drive down one street and think, "Oh, what lovely houses!" and round the corner and see homes that have been condemned but may or may not be inhabited anyway. It's pretty sketch.
