re: Not a good place for newcomers needing excitem -
8/16/2014I don’t know what excitement you were looking for but someone apparently never left their dwelling and is very young and inexperienced. Though Lincoln may not have big museums or a Starbucks on every corner, it IS a very artsy and friendly town. You are right, even though there is approx 200,000 people here now, it doesn't feel like a big city. It's very sprawling with very nice parks and friendly people. It's a very nice “small town” feel and a great town to raise kids. Low crime rate, good schools and lots for kids to do. I am sure Annie just met about 20 kids here in college and they were all probably from farming communities around Lincoln who HAVE lived for generations, but Annie, there are more than 20 people here in Lincoln. Lincolnites are NOT uncomfortable with other races. We have a high amount of African American and Mexican American, along with Sudanese and Asian. We actually have nice sections of town where these cultures have set up shops and restaurants. We have a very diverse town. I also do not believe that all of the college girls you came in contact with were going to UNL and paying for a degree to become a housewife. I do believe that well over 1/2 the coupled and/or married couples have two incomes. I have lived here most of life. About 44 years of it and have seen only about 1 square mile of "dumpiness" in a town of 91 square miles. I'm not quite sure where you were living however. Another thing, if you were here for 2 years, or even 4 years of college, I don't believe you have a great view of the weather here. You act as if you were living in Alaska or something. We do not get ice storms all of the time. Maybe one every two years. Stay home for one day and get the closets organized and the next day you'll be able to get out and go shopping. There's really only one month of really cold temps here and out of any year, you'd be hard pressed to find it get into the negs more than one or two days a year. And suffocating humid summers? Are you sure you weren't in Louisiana? Sure it gets humid here, but this is only about a month out of the year. It seems you just like cloudy rainy weather better than our climate here, so have fun in Seattle. :)

8/16/2014The economy here has always been good. Even during the 2008 crash, we didn't really feel it. I'm sure some people would disagree with me, but being in what USED to be "middle class", we've done quite well here. The only bad thing I could say is the property taxes here are quite high.
