I lived in Yakima for the first 19 years of my life and still have family there. I moved elsewhere in Washington for 2 years, and have now lived in Texas for 4 years. Boy do I miss Yakima.
As most people have said, Yakima is really in an ideal location. The weather is wonderful 300 days out of the year (with the exception of the occasional storm, cold winter day or really hot summer day). Spring and Fall are especially nice. You are only 2.5 hours from Seattle, 3 from Portland and only 1 hours from mountains and ski resorts. However, I do have to confirm some of the things the other commenters were saying. There is a crime problem in Yakima. I think most of it is drug fueled, as I do remember a very noticeable percentage of people in Yakima using methamphetamines. The meth problem in Yakima is particularly apparent to me, now that I have lived elsewhere and seen that not everywhere has so many sad looking drug addicts. Yakima also has somewhat of a gang problem.
That being said, I grew up in East Valley/ Moxee and it was a wonderful community. I think that any of the "suburban" areas of Yakima such as Selah, Moxee, Terrace Heights or West Valley would be excellent places to raise a family. All in all, I miss Yakima and cannot wait to relocate back to the Northwest.
